Outlook 97 won't start

G'day .... hoping one of you can help please ...... this problem is driving me
absolutely nuts - and for too many days now.

I've Googled till my fingertips are worn down and have found at least 2000
possible solutions that don't work.

Outlook 97 starts to open ("pls wait - building Outlook Bar"), then crashes,
before getting to the main screen.
It leaves mapisp32.exe running.
No error message.

I've uninstalled and re-installed:
- Office 97
- Outlook by itself
- Office 97 SR1
- Office 97 SR2
and
- jet35sp3.exe
...... testing Outlook 97 between each step, to no avail

Could it have something to do with
- MAPI32.dll?
- the fact that OE used to be the default mail reader on this PC?
- MAPI=1 in [Mail] section of win.ini?

Situation:
~~~~~~
LAN of 2 PCs - 1 connected directly to 'Net; 2nd PC connected to 'Net via the
first PC, using ICS
PC 1 = P4/3.0GB - PC2 = P4/2.4
XP Pro SP1
I have admin rights
Outlook Express runs fine, but says it's not the default mail reader - Outlook
is the default mail reader.
This install of Outlook will not actually be used for mail - my wife just uses
the Calendar functions - maybe this makes a difference. I have to admit to
knowing nothing about MS Exchange, Windows Messaging, etc - I use Outlook
Express
There are no Office updates required (checked via MS update site)
Reset the Toolbar; all Toolbar customizations will be lost and the Toolbar
will reset to what it looked like when you first installed Outlook. To do
this locate outcmd.dat and rename it to outcmd.old when Outlook is closed.
By default you can find it here;
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Hey - thnx for that
Can't get to that PC right now, but will check.
I thought that outcmd.dat was only on Outlook 2002 and later? ..... not in
Outlook 97?
Will check and advise anyway - thnx
Thnx for that - I've noted for future reference.
I gave up and formatted the sucker.
It's working noooooooooowwwww, so don't want to try your fix. :)
At least the PC is running fast again.
Thank you.
