Outlook 97 won't open

After installing Office 97, Outlook starts to open, then crashes, before
getting to the main screen ("trying to open Toolbar" I think? - it's done too
quickly to read) no error message - it leaves mapisp32.exe open.

I've installed:
- Office 97
- Office 97 SR1
- Office 97 SR2
and
jet35sp3.exe
testing Outlook 97 between each step, to no avail

PC = Win XP, P4/2.4GB

I'm surprised to not see any suggestions as yet.
Please help if you can - this problem is driving me nuts.

Extra info:

- XP SP1
- Windows Office Update has no updates for me
- this install of Outlook will not be used for mail - my wife just uses the
Calendar functions - may make a difference. I have to admit to knowing
nothing about MS Exchange, etc - I use Outlook Express.
