Outlook 2007 is sending 'phantom' messages!

Over the last 20 minutes, the status bar at the bottom right of my Outlook
2007 screen has been slowly cycling through a varying sequence of messages. A
sample sequence is as follows.

"Sending message 1 of 3"
"Sending message 3 of 5"
"Send/Receive Error - click here"
"Send/Receive"
"Sending message 3 of 5"
"Sending message 1 of 3"
"Send/Receive Error - click here"
"Preparing to send/receive..."
"Sending message 1 of 3"
"Sending message 3 of 5"
"Sending message 1 of 3"
"Send/Receive Error - click here"

After about 15 mins of this, I finally got
"Send/Receive Complete"

A minute or two later, the whole sequence started again.

I have three accounts set up in Outlook 2007 to handle my current email
address, my old email address and my wife's email address. The old address is
still working for incoming email but no longer functions for outgoing email.
If I follow the "Send/Receive Error - click here" message, I am told that the
old email account cannot connect to the outgoing email server.

The thing is, during this entire process the outbox was empty!! I wasn't
trying to send ANY messages.

Can anyone please explain what might have been happening here?

Hello David,

You have answered part of your question.

Either get rid of your old e-mail account or please enter the right outgoing
server information...

When you send an e-mail the e-mails will be scanned by your anti virus
program, this might result in slow performance of outlook while the e-mails
are sent and received.

To know whether the anti-virus program is created any problem please use the
article 310353 ( this will disable the anti virus program ).

If you come to know its the problem , contact Anti virus program.

If not lets enjoy the step 2.

Create a new profile. ( 314900 ).
Import the outlook data (287070)

please let us know about the status.

Thanks for attempting to help, but I don't quite understand your reply. You
say nothing about the key aspect of my problem, i.e. that Outlook is trying
to send non-existent emails.

As regards what you did say, my antivirus program's ability to scan incoming
and outgoing emails has already been disabled. Also, I can see no valid
reason to get rid of my old email account yet as I still receive occasional
emails from people who only know my old address (which has been publicised
via a website). The outgoing server information should be totally irrelevant
as I never send emails from that account.

Hi Raj,
I am delaying the implementation of your proposal to create a new profile.
First I want to see if Brian Tillman's later suggestion fixes my problem.
However, in case that does not work, I checked the Microsoft Knowledgebase
articles 310353, 314900 and 287070 that you referenced. Some comments
follow...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353/ is titled "How to configure Windows
XP to start in a clean boot state". Is that not a rather brutal way to turn
off an antivirus program? I use the free version of AVG and this allows me to
activate or deactivate components to meet my needs. I would have thought that
there was a relatively simple way to disable most antivirus programs.

Microsoft Knowledgebase article 314900 does not appear to exist. However a
search highlighted the article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918/ -
"How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2007 and in Outlook 2003".

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070/ is entitled "How to manage .pst
files in Outlook 2002 and in Outlook 2003" and thus cannot be trusted to
apply to Outlook 2007. I have not yet found an equivalent article for Outlook
2007.

I will let you know how I get on.
