Outlook 2007 is a RAM HOG!

Well I just gave up on Outlook 2007 Beta. RAM sits normally at 122MB
and is crashing often.

I can't believe what I see...memory usage at 122MB and 11% CPU (did a
screenshot).

Crap, my old Windows 98 didn't even use up that much HD space let alone
need that much to run!

Guess in today's economy with 1-2GB games (4GB for MS FS9) what's a
paltry 122MB?

Ok, then there's CPU usage...11%?

Well uninstalling Outlook 2007 and going back to 2003.

Whoops, can't do that.

Shucks, I'm hooped.

Oh yeah, the new Ribbon for Office take up MORE space than 2003. In
2003 I can use one row for Menu, the other for Toolbars. I guess I can
minimize the ribbon, but then where the heck is everything?

Then again, I can put the quick access toolbar below the ribbon and
loose more space...

You're not being very constructive in your feedback nor did you give any
specs of your system. Did you even bother to look through this newsgroup?
Most issues have been discussed more than once already.

Memory:
1) It's BETA; debug code is still within the application. The final release
will use less memory.
2) If you're running any add-ins; they will account for the memory usage as
well.
3) Memory management is done by Windows; if there is unused memory left
Windows will give that to applications who ask for it. As soon as other
applications are being started and request memory Outlook will return it.

CPU:
Did you just install? Then your mails are being indexed; this could take a
while. Also again; are you rrunning any add-ins?

Downgrade to Outlook 2003:
Sure you can do that. You didn't specify the issue you were encountering so
it's hard to help with this.

Ribbon:
You can minimize the Ribbon indeed. Where everything is after you hide it?
Just do a single click on it to reveal the buttons again.

Yes, Roady, I was venting. Constructive or not, Outlook to me is a
step backwards for Mom & Pop shops. Might be neat and cool for large
enterprizes, but not for my small shop.

While I apprecate your answer, I have to ask what does it matter about
specs, Outlook still takes up RAM.

Doesn't matter if I had 1GB or 4 GB, it just takes up RAM. Yes, as for
the CPU, then specs are important but the issue I am venting about is
RAM usage.

But to allure your fears, I have the following system: Windows XP Pro,
SP2, Office 2007Beta
P4 2.8, 512MB, 120GB. Yes I know the installation requirements, 256MB
RAM for Outlook or 512 with CM.

Which is my point. Just a decade ago, Windows 98, which still runs
decently today can run inside of the requirement of Outlook. Heck, I
could say even Windows 2000 Pro.

Even more so onecan run XP Pro on less RAM compared to Outlook with CM.

But I digress.

1. While it is BETA, and not suppose to run on production enviroment,
yadda yadda yadda, how does one test it apart for daily usage?

You mention the final release will use less memory? Oh, where do you
get this info? Inside contacts? Well, how come it uses so much right
now when the requirements are 256 and 512 comparable to Outlook 2003 or
2002 or 2000? What's changed as an email program?

2. What add-ins? I check the registry and there is the default, no
pdf's.

3. Nice talk about Windows, but it will allocate to whatever program
requests it, and also control how much. For instance, I load WORD 2007
and it doesn't even come near the amount of RAM needed, let alone CPU
usage as to when I load Outlook, before or after.

I do hope the final release keeps in mind Mom&Pop shops who can't
afford or find it nessessary to upgrade RAM, CPU and HD space to
accommodate a bloated program.

Heck, Eudora Pro might make a come back now.

cheers

I noticed in the ADD-INS (Tools/Trust Center) that iTunes has an
addon.

How does one go about removing the add on?

Oh, just found out, click down below "apply macro security setting",
then GO.

Why couldn't there be a simple Add/Remove button...?

Tried to add another email account...6 hours later - get warning
Outlook is still searching for folder...

So I tried closing it down. Don't have the patience for this kind of
crap. Now Outlook is a blank white box in my screen and I get this
error message:

Microsoft Office Word
"The Office Open XML file Building Blocks.dotx cannot be opened because
there are problems with the contents"

Details:
No error detail available.

............

Hoookie...now what?

Next time you might want to limit the venting to your personal blog only;
this is a support newsgroup.

"Outlook still takes up RAM"
Yep, just like any other application that is running. The requirements you
are refering too is including the OS. Nobody is forcing you to upgrade but
note that running modern software requires a modern computer; it has always
been like that.

1) Yep, and common knowledge concerning BETAs. After the BETA phase debug
code is being removed and code optimization will take place soo it will run
faster with fewer resource usage. Pre-BETA builds took 512-1024MB to run
somewhat smoothly.

2) Applications that tie into Outlook to use or extend Outlook
functionality. Security suits tend to do that by default which is in general
also a big memory hog and its functionaliy is completely redundant. You are
better of disabling that integration (see the documentation of your security
suite on how to do that).

3) Bloated? Eudora Pro? I somewhat ge the feeling that you are only using
Outlook as a mail client not as a PIM. The "Mom&Pop" version and the
Microsoft counterpart of Eudora would be Outlook Express or Windows Mail (in
Windows Vista).
