Outlook 2007 authentication

Darren

Hi,

Having just installed Outlook 2007 it will now not let me send Email.
My SMTP server requires authentication and this has been reflected in the
account properties (Same as incoming). When i try to send an emal, it keeps
popping up the account details box asking for correct username & password.
Even though the correct details are input, it continually displays this
dialog box without letting me send email.

I can only assume the fault to be with Outlook 2007 as i have set up the
same account under Outlook Express with no issues.

Any ideas or thoughts guys?

Any help and advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Darren,

Disable authentication and see what happens. If it doesn't work,
reenable it (but make sure to have it first tried with it disabled). I
have seen other people report the same issue and disabling
authentication helped them. I am still trying to understand what is
going wrong, so please report back to us what you did and what happened.

Thanks,

Patrick,

When i disable authentication i can only send emails within the company.
i.e. to email addresses that are provided by our server. I cannot send
emails outside of these addresses.

(e-mail address removed) -> i can send without authentication
(e-mail address removed) -> i cannot send without authentication

The "strange" thing is that i would have assumed that the incoming mail was
authenticated in the same way as outgoing mail. Incoming mail comes through
with no issues.

I have also tried checking the box to "log onto incoming mail server before
sending" but this has the same effect as no authentication.

Hi Darren,

Did you try what I suggested? Disabling, testing and then re-enabling it
and testing? This is a beta version, labels don't necessarily mean that
you get that functionality. The only way to check is to test.
SMTP authentication affects only sending email. Incoming email is not
handled by SMTP, but by a different protocol. Hence those settings never
have any effect on incoming email.

Thanks Patrick.

I have tried disabling, testing, re-enabling & testing always with the same
results.

My two Gmail accounts that i access through outlook have the same
authentication options set for these accounts and i can send and receive
with no issues.

Hi Darren,

Can you give us more details what the SMTP server is? I think this is a
bug and I would like to be able to tell Microsoft when this occurs.

Thanks,

Patrick,

Not sure what the SMTP server is. I work in a remote office and having spoke
to the IT guy today, who couldn't help, he mentioned that it was an old
Linux server. Further than that i don't know.

It is quite strange that Outlook Express can handle this while Outlook
cannot?

If i cannot find a resolution to this, is there anyway that i can uninstall
Outlook 2007, reinstall Outlook 2003 without losing my .pst files, emails
etc...?

Thanks for all your help Patrick. It was much appreciated.

Hi Darren,
Not sure what the SMTP server is. I work in a remote office and having spoke

Linux server. Further than that i don't know.
Could you call him again and ask what version of sendmail is running on
the server? That would be a very valuable piece of information for me to
give to MS so that they can look into this. Once you know it, please
find my email address on my website and send it to me via email. MS
probably won't get back on this for at least a week though, so don't
expect any fast resolution (if there is even any).

No. Outlook 2007 is a beta version and therefore problems are to be
expected.

You have to uninstall 2007 and then reinstall 2003, but I don't know how
well this will work. People have reported issues with this though, so be
warned. There might be an issue in which Outlook 2007 does not remove
all DLLs fully and hence you run into issues when trying to run 2003. MS
thinks that if done correctly (2007 uninstalled before 2003 is
installed), there shouldn't be any problems, but I am not sure. If you
run into any issues, search for posts in this group that have mapi32.dll
in the subject line. There are enough tips on how to try to solve the
problem. The basic idea is to delete the DLLs in question manually. You
might have to boot Windows in safe mode to do this.
You are going to have to create a new profile. When you installed 2007,
your profile was upgraded to 2007 and hence 2003 can't use it anymore.
Delete it via Control Panel, Mail. Notice that you are not going to use
your pst files, emails, contacts, etc. You have to add all your email
accounts and data files manually again to the profile though. Your rules
and other setting things like that are in trouble though. I don't
remember right now whether you can migrate your rules back from 2007 to
2003. Post a new thread with an appropriate subject line and your
chances are pretty high that anyone else here who knows how to do that
will reply.

If you run into trouble, post a new thread with an appropriate subject.
That way you have a better chance of getting a reply from anyone else
besides me (I will be away from my computer most of the rest of the
day). Make sure to include all information in any new thread you start.

Thanks,

Patrick,

Thanks very much for all the information. I will endeavour to find out what
version of sendmail they are running and email the information back to you.

Best regards,
Darren
