Outlook 2003 & XP attachment opening error

Eric Lee

Receiving Excel files, as email attachments.
Open from inside email & prompted to open or save...
Choose OPEN, and the Excel program startsup, but get Outlook error stating
that the file could not be found.
Yet, I can save the Excel file, and open it without any problems.

Thanks.

Often caused by a problem with your Temporary Internet Files cache. Try
emptying it. If that doesn't work, close Outlook and start a command line
prompt window. Then enter:

cd %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
dir /a

Look for a folder starting with OLK, like OLK41A. Delete it like this, and
exit the window

rmdir /s /q OLK41A
exit

Restart Outlook and try opening the attachment again.

Cleaning up Temporary Internet Files directory (there were 4 to choose from)
did not seem to help. Word opens from within an email. Excel still fails.

There was no file or directory starting with OLK in my PC, so I could not
follow other directions.

While I have no doubt you see what you do, I have a hard time acepting this,
because it is in a folder starting with OLK contained within the Temporary
Internet Files folder that Outlook opens its attachments when you
double-click on them from within Outlook. Did you include "/a" on the dir
command, like I said?

Try this: open a Word attachment within Outlook, then open the comand line
prompt window and CD to the path I named. Now use "dir /a" to see if
there's a OLK folder.

I did find & remove the OLK directory as you suggested. Excel still is
unable to open files directly from an email (Excel starts, but Outlook get
the original error that it can not find file specified.)

Suggestions.

Then I'm out of ideas. Sorry.

Brian,
Thanks for trying. Any suggestions on where I should go next for
assistance?
