Outlook 2003 Shows The Same PST File Open Twice

S

schu

I've been encountering this issue on multiple machines
here at work. Usually it's because I've imported a PST
file from Office2k into Office2003. Anyway, the main
problem is that it shows the same PST file open twice in
Outlook 2003 and you cannot close either of the open data
files. If you create a new data file and then close the
original Outlook.PST and rename the new data file to
Outlook.PST it still shows up twice. The only way I've
found around this is to reset the Outlook settings by
using the following command in the Run window:

outlook /importprf .\.prf

Any ideas on how I can fix this issue? I've encountered
it on at least ten machines if not more...

You have corrupted your mail profile, probably by overwriting a PST with
another of the saem name. Create a new profile in Control Panel>Mail>Show
Profiles>New

I was importing the PST file from Office 2000 into Office
2003 so it would use the new PST format that supports PST
files larger than 2gb. It just seemed like the best way
to do it... I'm reading the article right now, but it
seems to just show how to move and open your old PST file
after doing a fresh install of Outlook. I need a way to
either import or convert an Outlook 2000 file into Outlook
2003 without corrupting the profile...

Why are you importing PST's? That is not the correct way to migrate data.
Your profiles are corrupt.

The article tells you how to open your old PST file and set it to be the
default in the new installation. That is what you need to do.
No importing involved. Your profile will not be corrupt. The instructions
are all there. Was there something else you were wanting to do?

If you don't want to make the old ANSI-format PST the default, then, after
opening it, drag-and-drop (or right-click-drag-and-drop) the items in each
of the predefined folders to the same folders in the new Unicode-format PST
and move or copy the non-predefined folders to that PST as well. Then you
can close (and delete if you wish) the ANSI PST.

Although I just read this:

Which seems to indicate that you are supposed to import
your data when moving from 2000 - 2003 if you want to use
the new PST format. Any ideas?

Importing can lose data. It's better to open both the old and the new PSTs
and move items from the old to the new.
