Thanks Robert for the thorough response.
In relation to your responses:
1) Would I be able to send MS Word or Excel 2000 documents to Outlook
2003 as an attachment to an e-mail?
2) How do you copy my existing pst-file to the Outlook 2003 format? The
current file is named "outlook.pst"; is the Outlook 2003 file named
dufferently?
3) I'm not sure what you mean by "doing an upgrade". Does this occur when
you install Outlook 2003 where a question of the following nature arises,
"Would you like to uninstall Outlook 2000?"
4) I downloaded a file from Microsoft named "PST file backup - Win32
Cabinet Self-Extractor" to assist in the regular backup of PST files from
Outlook. When I invoke the file now, it says I do not have Outlook 2000,
2002 or 2003 installed on my computer. Will I have the same problem if I
install Outlook 2003?
I presume the reason the download does not work currently is because of
the following background. I have not been able to obtain responses to my
problem so thought I would have to purchase an updated version of Outlook:
a) I purchased a new computer and went from Windows ME to Windows XP
Home. I had to reinstall the MS Office Professional 2000 including
Outlook. All other programs are working fine, but not Outlook. When I try
to open it, a message appears, "Operation failed".
b) Outlook Express is working fine, too, but I cannot locate any of my
previous "Contacts".
c) My ".PST file", which is over 74,000 KB is located in the directory
C:\Outlook and appears to have all my contacts, e-mails, e-mail addresses,
calendar, etc. in it.
d) In Control Panel>Mail, when I click it, it does not open. I wonder
if that has any bearing on my problem since "Mail" includes "Microsoft
Outlook Profiles"?
I'm not sure you can offer help on this latter problem, but I sure can use
some assistance. I prefer not to have to purchase an updated Outlook,
because I was quite satisfied with the previous one when it was working on
my old computer.
Thanks,
Duncan

1) Outlook 2003 won't integrate with other Office 2000 applications. For
instance you cannot use Word as your e-mail editor or use Mail Merge.
2) Yes, you can use your existing pst-file but you might want to consider
copying it to the new Outlook 2003 pst format. The new pst fileformat
supports Unicode and allows you to store over 20GB in a single pst-file
(previous versions can be up to 2GB)
3) You can do an upgrade on it. The installer will automatically remove
Outlook 2000 for you. After upgrading you might need to recreate your
mail
profile;

4) making a copy of your pst-file is always good practise

Hi:
I operate on Windows XP Home Edition.
I am considering the purchase of Outlook 2003 as a stand-alone program. I
now have MS Office Pro 2000 installed on my computer.
Are there any compatability problems between Outlook 2003 and the other
MS
Office Pro 2000 programs, such as Word, Excel, etc?
If not, can I have Outlook 2003 use my existing .PST file correctly or
are
there some technical matters that have to be dealt with first?
If I were to install Outlook 2003, do I need to uninstall Outlook 2000?
When
I go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, it appears I can only
uninstall
all of Office 2000 and not the individual Outlook 2000. Is there a way to
do
this? I presume I would have to retain a copy of the .PST file in any
event.
Thanks for your help.
