I am trying to import an Outlook 2003 pst file into
Outlook 2002 but get an invalid file format.
You would think that being only one version apart that it
would be no problem. Any ideas?

Outlook 2003 uses a new PST format by default. In order to use the PST in
Outlook 2002, you need to create a new PST in Outlook 2003. Choose the
Outlook 97-2002 compatible format. Then copy the items from the incompatible
PST to the new PST. You can then use that new PST in Outlook 2002.

Can you please provide more specific instructions? I am
trying to copy my Outlook 2003 PST file so I can use it
in Outlook 2000 on another machine. I created
an "Outlook 97-2002" compatible PST and tried to copy my
Outlook 2003 data to it. But it is only producing a
small file, that Outlook 2000 won't open. I must be
doing something wrong in the copy phase of the process.
Can you provide a more step-by step set of instructions,
please? Thank you!

You'd have to copy the individual items into the new PST file. So go to your
INbox folder in the 03 PST. Select Edit, Select All. Then Edit, Copy to
Folder and copy them to a folder in your 97-2002 PST. DO that for all of
your folders.

You can also export to the new PST file, although Exporting can often be
problamatic and doesn't preserve the original dates from your original
items. Copying is much more reliable.

Is that enough information?

Thanks for your input....

I left my prior company any I dont have access to outlook
2003 anymore...I only have outlook 2002...any way to
manipulate the OL2003 PST I have on my desktop to get it
into 2002?

Thanks for the quick response, but I still need more
information, I'm afraid. The "Outlook 97-2000
compatible" file that I created resides in a Windows
subdirectory. However, when I followed your instructions
to "Copy the individual items in the new PST file",
Outook 2003 is only offering me its own folders as
potential places into which to save the information. It
is not giving me the option to save it to the file that I
created for that purpose, but which resides within the
Windows directory, not within Outlook itself. I'm
obviously still missing something here! Thanks in
advance for any additonal instruction that you can
provide.

Create a new PST in 97-2002 format, copy the items you wish into it, close
it in OL2003 and open it in OL2002. (Don't import! Use File>Open.)

Ok, you need to open the Outlook 97-2002 compatible PST in Outlook 2003.

As you stated in another post that you don't have Outlook 2003 anymore, you
are pretty much out of luck. You can order an evaluation copy of Office 2003
from Microsoft for the cost of shipping and that will give you a 60 day
trial. This will enable you to use Outlook 2003 to copy the items to an
Outlook 2002 PST.
