Outlook 2003 .PST not showing unread or total emails

At work I have upgraded to Outlook 2003 and we use MS Exchange server. Due to
a small corporate allowance of 20mb for my mailbox on the server, I utilize
several .pst files on my computer to save various mails. Some of these
folders I have created rules to move messages to them as they arrive.

Since the upgrade to Outlook 2003, these folders do not show the amount of
Unread items in them next to the folder name. I have tried selecting to show
All items as well and that doesn't show either. I've spent a few hours
searching the internet and these newsgroups but I can't find a solution. Does
any one have an idea of why it is not showing my unread items?

I also created a new Outlook data file(.pst) since upgrading to see if a new
folder created with the newer version would function properly, but no luck.
Previously we had Outlook 2000, and it would show the number of new unread
mails next to the folder.

is the mail in the folder unread? if so, it should show the count without
any problems. Did you try making a new profile?

The mail in there is unread. I even tried reading some and marking it unread
again but still no luck. I will try to make a new profile and see if that
helps.

Well I tried to make a new profile and that didn't fix it either. I'm not
sure what else to try. I tried creating both versions of the .pst folder as
well, both the current one and the one compatible with older versions of
Outlook.

No matter what I do, I can't get the notification of either Total Mail or
Total Unread Mail to show up next to those other folders. Perhaps i'm
creating them wrong or something, but I don't think so.

I'm using the default theme. Nothing fancy at all, as it's the company
laptop. I logged on via the VPN at home and noticed the same behavior.

When I was talking about creating them, I meant the outlook data file, such
as File, New, Outlook Data File. Once I create one of those, which places the
..pst file on my local hard drive, mail moved to it doesn't show next to that
mail folder as being unread. If I right-click on that particular mail folder
and choose "show total number of items" it doesn't display that number in
green either as it did in Outlook 2000. Neither the total or total unread
will show.

It's not a huge deal. I can work around it. I'll just have to be more
diligent in responding to those mails with large attachments and moving them
off to a backup folder after I respond. Outlook 2003 may not have the
functionality I am looking for like 2000 did. But I would think it should as
the options are there when I right-click the mail folder.

I am having the exact same problem since upgrading to Outlook 2003, and like
the originator of this posting, have searched many help files within the
program and the Microsoft website, and can't find anything. The problem
seems to be connected to *.pst folders created outside of the Personal
Folders file; i.e. any folders that I create within Personal Folders properly
display the number of unread e-mails, but those folders attached to a *.pst
file other than my primary *.pst do not display the number of unread e-mails.
