Outlook 2003- Newsreader disappeared?

Hey everyone, got a question- I moved from OE 6 onto Outlook 2003 (part of
Office 2003 Enterprise Edition), and also moved all my microsoft & oracle
newsgroups into the Outlook news reader. I added the link to the "go" menu,
as per the Office docs. But, the news menu item is gone!

If I change, in Outlook, from "Mail" view to "Contacts" or "Calender" (on
the leftmost frame), the "Go/News" menu/item appears. If I click on News,
it opens up my "C:\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\MSMAPI\1033" directory.

Has anybody seen this? I couldn't find anything about this on the 'net.
Also- should I be using Outlook 2003 for newsgroups? It seems like nntp was
integrated very well with Outlook Express, but that nntp was an
"afterthought" for the Office suite. Is it smarter to use Outlook Express
for newsgroups instead?

I also have a gripe; my OE 6 was on my old PC. When I got my new PC, I set
up Outlook 2003 on it, and followed the Office 2003 docs to move my messages
over from the old pc to the new, along with my address book (WAB). I
followed each step word-for-word, and wound up with a mess! Finally, I
deleted everything from my new Outlook 2003, and moved the old pc's data
(local folders and .WAB file) over using "My Way"- traditional file copying,
registry editing, and imports/exports, etc- and I didn't have a problem.
Somebody at MS needs to go over those docs again- Especially for the
"contacts"/address book transfer!

Thanks!

-Thomas

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

Russ, thanks, that worked! My newsgroup entry was "blank" in
InternetOptions/Programs. After I changed it to OE, I was able to get to
the Outlook News Reader.

What's odd is, this newsgroup even appeared in the "Outlook News Reader",
even though I added it only in OE. Does the Outlook News Reader use OE
behind-the-scenes? Do you think it's better if I stick to OE for news,
instead of Outlook 2003?

Thanks!!

Outlook, by default, uses OE to read news, yes. You can, however, tell OL
to use whatever newsreader you prefer or purchase one of the
commercially-available newsreader add-ins to Outlook. OL itself cannot read
news.
