Outlook 2003 Meeting Requests to Outlook 2000 users

When a 2003 user sends a meeting request that includes a user still on
Outlook 2000, they just get a garbled message and are unable to accept or
decline.

It's not garble. It's raw iCalendar. Unfortunately, there is a known incompatiblity between Outlook 2000 and later versions related to reminders on meeting requests sent in iCalendar (aka iCal) format. To resolve this issue, do one of the following:

-- Contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the Outlook 2000 post-SP3 hotfix described in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823199

-- Tell the senders to remove any reminder before sending you an iCal meeting request.

-- Tell the senders to send to you in native Outlook meeting request (RTF) format, not as iCal.

I'm not sure if my issue is related to this, however it does sound like it.
When someone sends a meeting request to one of our outlook 2000 users she
recieves a plain text email w/no option to accept or deny but the meeting
details in the message body + a link to OWA. Here's a test request I sent:

When: Tuesday, August 16, 2005 10:30 AM-11:00 AM (GMT-08:00) Pacific Time
(US & Canada); Tijuana.

Microsoft Outlook Web Access:

Anyone know what could be causing this? Everyone else on our network seems
to be fine.

I'm having the same problem, but it's occurring between computers that are
all running Office 2003. I've unchecked the box in Outlook that sends the
invitation as iCal, so they should be going rtf, but we're still having
problems being able to access the response buttons. Everyone can receive my
invitations fine, but there are a couple people who I can't receive them from
but other people can. I'm having a hard time figuring out a pattern... Any
suggestions?

Many thanks.

If you want to send RTF, you need to mark the recipient's address for RTF.

I did figure out a way to make it work. It involves adding all message
recipients to all sender's contact lists and making sure that the messages
are sent to the recipients in rtf. Here are the detailed instructions from MS:

"I sent a meeting request over the Internet, but the recipient received a
regular message.

Meeting requests are created in Rich Text format, but by default, Outlook
2002 converts them to Internet (iCal) format when you send them over the
Internet. One of the following situations may have occurred.

The request was sent in iCal format, but the recipient is using Outlook 98
or 97, which only support RTF format for requests. Do one of the following:
To reserve RTF format for a request sent to a particular Internet recipient

1. If you haven't already done so, add the recipient as a contact.
2. With the contact open, in the E-mail box, double-click the contact's
e-mail address.
3. In the Internet Format list, select Send using Outlook Rich Text
format."

This remedy specifically refers to Outlook 2002, but it solved my problems
in Outlook 2003. Here's the link to the article, too:

Good luck!
