outlook 2003 junk mail

sender is outlook 2003; mail server is exchange 2003 sp1; receiver is outlook
2003 fully patched with sp2 and latest (october) junk patch. i have a
repeatable instance where an email ends up in the receiver's junk folder.
most email works correctly. the same email sent to another user is not
delivered to junk folder. sender and receiver both have accounts on exchange
server. i assume that the problem must be with the receiver's outlook but i
can't figure out what. imf is in use, but i don't think it should be in play.
can anyone help?

thanks,

roger

Any details on the message that is being considered as Junk? Tried putting
the address in the Safe Senders list already?

the message appears to be pure text. the only thing a little unusual is that
it has about 10 replies (dialogue back and forth). we put the local domain in
safe senders. but my read is that local mail should never go to junk.

Hello Roger,

From the post log, I would like to collect the following information to
narrow down this issue:

Does this issue occur in every account or some specific user account? For
example, if UserA sends an email to UserB, this email will be filtered into
Junk Email folder; and, if this email UserA sends the same email to UserC,
this email will not be filtered into Junk Email folder. What I want to
know is if this issue only occurs on these specific accounts: UserA, B, and
C. Also if the roles exchange (e.g. UserA is the receiver), does this issue
recur?

In the meantime, please try the following steps to narrow down this issue.

Step 1: Install the latest Office service pack
----------------------
The Junk E-mail filter is being improved by the latest Office service packs
and updates. So I suggest that we install the latest Office 2003 updates
and check if this issue disappears:

(1) Office 2003 SP2 update download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=57E27A97-2DB6-4654-
9DB6-EC7D5B4DD867&displaylang=en

Update for Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter (KB921580)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5f2e05ee-284d-4bd4-
aad0-ce95375d48cb&DisplayLang=en

(2) I also suggest that you go to the following link to run the automatic
detection. That will lead us to install the correct updates for Office:
http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx

Step 2: Recreate the Junk E-mail rule
----------------------
If this issue still occurs, it may occur due to a corrupt Junk E-mail rule.
Therefore, I suggest we use Mdbvu32.exe to remove the Junk E-mail rule
folder and test the issue again. You can also get it from the following
link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=3D1C7482-4C6E-4EC5-
983E-127100D71376&displaylang=en

Note: Please back up your Outlook before doing so. If you have configured
any rules in Outlook, please click Tools menu -> Rules and Alerts ->
Options -> Export Rules for a backup.

1. Quit Outlook and start the Mdbvu32.exe utility on the client computer.
2. In the MAPILogonEx(MAPI_LOGON_UI) dialog box, click OK (you do not need
to set any flags).
3. In the MDB Viewer Test Application window, click MBD - OpenMessageStore.
4. Click Personal Folders, of which there is "D" in front (this marks the
..pst file set in the delivery location), and then click Open.
5. In the MDB Viewer Test Application window, click MBD - Open Root Folder.
6. In the Child Folders pane of the MAPI_FOLDER - Root window, double-click
Search Root.
7. In the Child Folders pane of the MAPI_FOLDER - Top of Personal Folders
window, highlight Junk E-mail folder.
8. In the Operations Available drop-down menu, click IpFld->DeleteFolder,
and then click the Call Function button.
9. Select "Delete messages" and "Delete folders" and then click OK.
10. In the MAPI_FOLDER - Top Of Information Store dialog box, click Close.
11. In the MAPI_FOLDER - Root dialog box, click Close.
12. On the MDB menu, click Store Logoff, and then click OK in the IpMDB-
StoreLogoff() dialog box.
13. On the Session menu, click Session Logoff.
14. On the Session menu, click Exit to close the Mdbvu32 file.
15. Click Start -> Run, type "Outlook /resetfolders" (Quotation marks are
not included and there is a space between Outlook and /) and press Enter.

This will help us regenerate the Junk E-mail folder and the filter rule.

Hope this helps!

Ada Pan
