Outlook 2003 error 0x8004210B BUT!

Hi
Outlook 2003 on Windows XP

From one day to the next I get the following error message when emailing
with attachments....

Task 'Andrea Lachner - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation
timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you
continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).'
Task 'Andrea Lachner - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0B) : 'Unknown Error
0x800CCC0B'

HOWEVER .... the email IS sent and then stays in the Outbox only to have
Outlook send it again and again and again unless I simply move the email to
the Sent folder manually where it then sits as an unsent message ... in other
words Outlook is not only reporting an error when there doesn't seem to be
one, it is also not moving the email into the Sent folder...
This only happens with emails with attachments.
I have sent myself many test emails and each time the email IS sent as it
arrives in my Inbox, but with the above error and then it does not get moved
to the Sent box...
This is a big problem as when I send emails to clients they receive the same
email x times.... and i can never be sure whether or not the email has in
fact been sent...
but am filling up their inbox with many copies of my email...

Please, please help urgently!!
Many thanks
Andrea

Is antivirus actively scanning incoming and outgoing email? This is a typical
symptom of it.

I use Nod32 and have already unchecked scanning outgoing email :)
I read through as many similar problems all of today before posting...
but thanks for prompt response... any more ideas? :)

Often unchecking the box is not sufficient. With most AV applications you
have to uninstall and reinstall, omitting the integration with Outlook.
You can also check your Add Ins and COMs. If you start Outlook in safe mode,
see if the behaviour continues:

Start > Run > Outlook.exe /safe

Where do I find "Add Ins" and "COMs" ? I tried to do the Start > Run >
Outlook.exe /safe, but that came up with an error that Windows can't find
that file...

Nod32 was bought online, so uninstalling and reinstalling is far from
simple. Nod32 is also not as simple as Norton or AVG and doesn't 'show' you
that it is scanning outgoing emails like I know the other 2 do .... but there
was an obvious box for sent emails... and that is now unchecked and I have
restarted the system...

Besides, why would this happen from one day to the next anyhow? Especially
the fact that the emails get sent anyhow... aaarrrghhhh LOL

I appreciate your help on this but

That's usually because you didn't include the space between "outlook.exe"
and "/safe". Find the addins on Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options>Add-In
Manager or COM Add-Ins.

Because you have NOD32 configured to update itself automatically and a
recent update broke its normal behavior.

sorry... only saw now I never finished my sentence! LOL... was going to say
surely it must be a Outlook problem and not anti virus?

But just to confuse us completely.... I just sent yet another test to
myself... created a new email instead of trying to forward an 'unsent' one or
sending an 'unsent' one and it worked perfectly!!! Sent without errors and
moved it from the outbox to the sent folder...

So now I am totally flumoxed! LOL
