Outlook 2003 desktop icon on Windows XP gives exployer errors.

The new microsoft interface initiative says no desktop icons, but I want the Outlook icon
back on the desktop. I have tried the registry hack and it restored the desktop icon.
And it does restore the icon. But when I right click and say properties, I get 3 idiot boxes
saying explorer errors and then it opens the mail setup - outlook just fine.

How do I get the icon without the errors?

And no a dump (not fully function) windows shortcut will not do :)

I just tried on my machine, and these steps worked without having to go into the registry. I'm running XP with Office 2003.

Click the Start menu, click to Microsoft Office.
Right click drag the Microsoft Outlook icon from the Start Menu to your desktop.
When you release the Right Mouse Button, a menu pops up. Select Copy Here.

That worked for me. (Swap Right and Left instructions, if you're using a left-handed mouse configuration on your system).

Hope that helps!

Thankx DanteG for the effort but to quote myself
"And no a dump (not fully function) windows shortcut will not do :)"
I meant dumb or regular windows shortcut was not what I was looking for.

With the typical desktop Outlook icon, when you right click on it and click
properties you get the same thing as the "Mail" icon in the control panel or
"Mail Setup - Outlook"

I am typing this message from a Windows 2000 box with Office 2003 and the
Outlook desktop icon is functioning correctly. I need that same functionality
in Windows XP.

Why not create a shortcut to the Control Panel Mail applet on your desktop?

because when you double click on the mail applet it does not run outlook, it configures the mail.
With the normal outlook desktop icon you can launch outlook or right click and configure it.
