Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2003 IMF

P

Peter Lawton

When IMF is installed on an Exchange 2003 server and Outlook 2003 is working
online what do the settings in Outlook 2003 "Chose the
level of Junk email protection you want" and select either "Low" or "High"
actually do? Do they override the global IMF setting for "Move Messages" and
if so what SCLs do "Low" and "High" correspond to?

So for example if the IMF on Exchange is set to Move messages with an SCL
greater than 5 to Junk E-Mail how do the Junk-Email settings the Outlook
2003 users set affect this.

Thanks

This goes untested but I believe these work independent from eachother. The
IMF works at the server level while the Junk E-mail Filter works on the the
client level. In other words; the JEF will catch what the IMF doesn't. This
can be practical in some situations where the IMF is set to a low level and
the JEF to a high level. This will allow the administrator to catch the most
obvious e-mail while letting the end-user have (some) control on what is
considered SPAM.

For an explanation of how they work, see

The IMF filter moves messages to Junk mail based on the server setting.
However - users can override it with safe lists. The article says the junk
settings override it too, but I'm not sure to what extent, other than
safe/blocked lists.

I have mine on High and the SCL is on two for client side - I'm going to
lower it to 3 as half of the stuff in the junk folder is not spam... it's
worse than the original outlook filter. :) IMF is letting very little spam
into the mailbox - it's not nearly as good on public folders though.

Thanks I under stand it better now.

One more question, is there any way to create Junk E-Mail folders for all
users on a server?

It'll be a while before we can upgrade everyone from Outlook 2002 to Outlook
2003 and as far as I understand if I could create the folders for Outlook
2002 users the Exchange 2003 server would move messages there based on the
SCL set by the IMF

Correct - if the folder exists, IMF on the server works for everyone...
you'll need to use VBA to create the folder - try outlookcode.com for code
samples or the outlook programming newsgroup on this server.
