Outlook 2002 phone # format

I recently reinstalled my Outlook 2002 and now when I enter a phone number
in contacts, 8009999999, that is the way it stays, instead of formatting to,
1(800)999-9999. How did this happen and how do I correct it?
Thanks.

Fix the dialing options in Windows Control Panel.

Interesting, why the connection?

Because Outlook uses the Windows dialer and its dialing properties to
determine how to mask the phone number, the algorithms for which are
hard-coded in Outlook.
