How do I stop outlook from automatically adding "+" to phone numbe

When I add a phone number in Outlook, it automatically prepends a plus (+)
sign to the number. So for example 1 (999) 999-9999 becomes +1 (999) 999-9999.

My understanding (which is to say, not much) of this is it's being formatted
according to my country (Canada), despite the fact the checkbox for
"Automatically add country/region code to local phone numbers" is unchecked.

It's a little frustrating that I can't find any documentation on this
"feature", and there doesn't seem to any way to turn it off.

Though it seems minor, unfortunatly when I sync these numbers to my phone,
any number with a "+" in front becomes un-reachable, which means I then have
to go via the phone and edit every number that I previously edited in
Outlook..which is to say using Outlook becomes pointless.

I should say I have found 1 workaround, and that's to enter numbers like
1-999-999-9999, unfortunatly when I enter numbers via the phone it prefers
the 1(999) 999-9999 format, which means I then have edit that number again in
Outlook. I'd rather get the two contact lists on the "same page" so to speak.

If anyone out there can tell me how to turn this "feature" off, it would be
greatly appreciated.

The problem is with your phone, not Outlook. Outlook must use standard
canonical format. It cannot and should not do otherwise. If _you_ enter the
country code, Outlook will format it correctly. The feature you turned off
is a different one. It tells Outlook to add the country code if you don't
want to.

me, otherwise it's of no use to me..which it would seem is the case here.

Oh, sure. Outlook should just store its data in whatever format suits the
whim of each user.
What kind of database would that be?
Thankfully, Outlook follows conventional standards. Anything else would be
useless.
