Outlook 2002 no longer functioning

I suddenly cannot start or use Microsoft Outlook. I have had it installed for
over 6 months on this computer with Vista Premium. It was working perfectly
up until 2 weeks ago, then the following error message began popping up:

"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater. You can install
outlook express by running IESetup.exe from the IE5 folder located on your CD
or through the Windows Update website."

I use Windows Live mail to get email, but Outlook to sync my contacts and
address from my Samsung Blackjack Smartphone. I can not sync my phone either
using windows sync or Mobile device center.

I have tried repairing and reinstallation of Outlook with no help, getting
the same message.

Any ideas that may help me?

I have no other accounts on my computer nor in Outlook (identities).

Howdy,

PMJI, but...

I think Roady was suggesting that you create a new user
account to see if that helps...

All the best,

Thanks for the suggestion, already tried, but that didn't work. Odd but, I
entered safe mode and it works there perfectly. I have to assume it is a
Windows driver or update issue of some sort now. I may have to try a restore
point fix to see if it works then. Any other optional suggestions before I do
a full backup and restore would be thoroughly welcome. Thanks again !

Outlook doesn't have identities, so perhaps you're not using Outlook.
Moreover, Outlook 2002 is not compatible with Vista, so perhaps you're not
using Outlook. Lastly, since Vista has Windows Mail and not Outlook
Express, I don't think you could confuse Outlook and Outlook Express.
Something in your story doesn't seem right.

Brian, Outlook 2002 is (or was until 2 weeks ago) compatible with Vista, but
Outlook Express is not. I have been using Vista and Outlook since March 2007
on my new laptop computer and before that with all the BETA testing versions
of Vista on another laptop. 2002 (XP) just won't save passwords across
sessions for email accounts. Otherwise it worked perfectly as an email client
and syncing to my cell phone!

As for the Identities terminology I used, as you mentioned, Outlook does NOT
have them but profiles- as I had one setup for my email and one for my cell
phone synchronization. My mistake in words, using identity instead of
profile. OOPS!

Still no help from this post, though I am still requesting it. Sorry for the
confusion. I hope my story is right now...

According to Microsoft, Outlook is not compaticble with Vista.
2002 (XP) just won't save passwords across sessions for email accounts.

Exactly the incompatibility documented.

Have you tried removing Windows Mail as a Windows component and then
readding it?

Tried that again, but no change. I totally uninstalled Outlook again and
re-installed it and all the updates for Outlook. Still not working. Then
reinstalled Live Mail. A thought, should I clean Outlook tracks from the
registry after an uninstall, too? Could I have a corupted registry entry that
is "hanging on" after an unistall?

Windows Live Mail, eh? This is introducing another factor that wasn't
mentioned at the beginning. I don't know what effect Windows Live Mail
would have on the detection of the proper DLLs by Outlook 2002, considering
that OL 2002 was never meant to run on Vista in the first place. Naturally,
I was talking about the standard Windows Mail that comes with Vista.
Uninstall WIndows Live Mail completely. Then repair WIndows Mail. See if
the problem is mitigated.

About Live Mail mention, as stated in my very 1st initial post, I used
Outlook only to sync my cell phone and Live Mail to retreive email. (As a
side note, I use Live Mail over Windows mail, because of ability to get email
from Hotmail accounts)

I have my email accounts registered in Outlook so my cell messages would
sync, but retreived my email in Windows Live Mail (desktop version). Have
tried removal of Outlook and Live mail. I cannot find any way to disable
Windows mail in the control panel (turn off/on Windows features area).

I have installed only Outlook and various combinations of the other program
as installed program combos with Outlook. I even tried a prior version of
Live Mail in different combinations. Initially, all worked as expected
(w/Outlook limitations on passwords) until a few weeks ago.

I may try a restore point fix from here on out. If that does not work, I
will format and start over to get it back.

This is not working for me. I felt I was giving all the info needed to get
this cleared up, but either I am not making my situation clear or (sorry
previous helpers) my few prior and short threads are not being read closely
in an attempt to help me out.

I appreciate all the time and efforts put out by all those that have added
their comments to this post, and will see you again if i experience a
situation that I need help on again from this community.

And I incorrectly interpreted that to mean you log into Windows Live and use
the web interface. Sorry.

I can't help, clearly. However, I can think of any number of things that
could have happened (like Vista updates, for example) that have finally
broken OL 2002 on Vista, since it was never supported in the first place.
Good luck in your search for a solution.
