Outlook 2002 - Location of Inetrnet Email Account Info

J

James MacKenzie

I cannot find the entries in the registry for OUtlook 2002 email account
info. In Outlook 2000 it used to be stored in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\OMI Account
Manager\Accounts

The reason I need access to this information is as follows:

I move between several different offices for different companies and have
logins to different win 2000 domains (none are part of the same forest) As a
result, I have different profiles. In addition, for convenience, I keep my
Outlook pst file on my notebook which travels with me. I then use the
notebook as my file server and work off the local office machines. I also
sync my outlook pst file in some offices.

The problem is that outlook stupidly for some reason uses a unique account
id when you create a new internet mail account and the Rules system uses
this id to match accounts rather than - as I would have expected - its name.
Thus, the rules wizard cannot recognise the accounts set in different
profiles - it just shows the account as "specified". Thus I cannot have
rules set up in different profiles without having to reset the account name
in each one in each office I visit each time I visit it. How dumb can that
be!!

In Outlook 2000, I just edited the account id in the registry to change each
account id for each respective account to the same number. Then the system
worked perfectly. However, I cannot do that in 2002 because I cannot find
the location of the accounts.

I have searched the registry but find nothing. The old OMI Account settings
are there but they are obviously not used by 2002 because they contain
accounts I have since deleted and do not contain new accounts I have added.

Please help before I am driven demented

James

PS I know that if I copy my profile from one system to all the others that
this will work. However, this would be a real hassel and I cannot do this
each time I add a new account.

I don't use Internet Mail in Outlook since I have a
SBS2000 server on the back end or I'd lookup this key for
you. However you seem savy enough to simply show you how.
(I won't give you a fish, I'll teach you to fish)

Hop out to www.sysinternals.com and download a free
utility named RegMon. (I'd recommend FileMon as well,
although you won't need it for this exercise <G>). Once
you've downloaded the utility, unzip it and start
Outlook.
1. Start RegMon.
2. Click on the little maginfying glass to stop the
capture (it'll generate ALOT of logging).
3. Click the eraser to clear the log
4. Flip over to Outlook and navigate to the setting that
you are looking for, but don't change it yet
5. Position the windows so that you can get back to
RegMon REALLY quickly after making the change in Outlook
6. Flip over to RegMon and click the magnifying glass to
start logging
7. Make the change in Outlook
8. Click the magnifying glass to stop the capture.
9. The registry entry that was changed in Outlook will be
logged.

I can't stress enough that you need to be VERY quick when
doing this since RegMon will log all registry access and
the log will be enormous if you're not fast. That's the
reason you should get Outlook as close to the change as
possible. If there's an APPLY button, I usually make the
change in Outlook, start RegMon capture, then click
APPLY, and stop the capture.

As you probably have guessed, FileMon does the same thing
except for the file system. I highly recommend both these
tools for your toolbox. And no, I'm not affiliated with
sysinternals.com in any way. And the tools are FREE, my
favorite price.
