Outlook 2000 loads too slow - 4 minutes

Every day when I first start Outlook 2000, it takes 4 minutes to
load.

During the day, after I close it and leave it closed for awhile, it
again takes 4 minutes. If I just close it and immediately reopen it,
it only takes a couple of seconds.

I do have lots of email folders with lots of old email I want to
keep.

During the 4 minutes while it is loading, the hard drive light stays
on continuously and my machine is pretty much useless while I wait.

What could be causing the delay?

Internet Mail Only mode or Corporate/Workgroup mode? What's the PST size?
What's the largest number of items in any one folder? Do you have any AV
scanner integrated with Outlook? What type of account?
