Outlook 2000 --> 2002 iCalendar

I am using Outlook 2002 and my customer (different company) is using
2000. The "when sending meeting requests over the internet use
iCalendar format" option is not available on my customer's version of
Outlook. When she sends meeting invitations to me they arrive as text
emails, not iCalendar items.

I have seen multiple posts about compatibility issues when sending the
other direction (from 2002 to 2000) but no discussion of the problem I
am having.

Any ideas on how to work around this?

Is the customer using Exchange as their mail server? If so, what version?
