Out_of_luck Express problem

Help! I can't close down OE. I rec'd an e-mail from Sony ericsson last week -
hit the reply button to respond... since then can't send / receive e-mails. I
have tried to delete the e-mail and each time I exit I get "end program - o"
and when I re-boot the e-mail is there again. I have tried system restore
from a date prior to the day I rec'd the e-mail and SFC /scannow(?) which ran
for ages but the problem still exists - been messing around for hours now
joy. Any advice?
Thx

You have one or more corrupted dbx folders.

Create a new Local folder by placing the cursor on Local Folder in the
folder list and selecting File,Folder, New. Move the contents of the
Sent Items folder you wish to keep to your new folder.

Close Outlook Express.Using Windows XP you need to
enable show hidden files. Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View,
Advanced Settings. Next enter Windows Explorer. Using Tools, Find, Files
and
Folders search your C drive with "Sent Ite*.db*" without quotes as the
search
criteria and see if you can find more than one folder. Delete what is
found. Repeat the process using Outbo*.db*" as the search criteria.

Renter Outlook Express and run File, Folder, Compact All whilst
OFFLINE.

Hope this helps.

settings.....\windowsnt\msfax
esent.dll
esentull
All of the outbox ones deleted Ok.
I tried to follow the same line on the Inbox and deleted everything in the
way you described ... but on start up as soon as I hit send / recieve
despite there being 35 e-mals ready to be recieved from my inbox the dreaded
e-mail from sony rec'd last week popped up frst and everything stopped again .

If you delete your Sent Items.dbx and your Outbox.dbx from Windows
Explorer with Outlook Express closed then the system automatically
provides replacements when you next open Outlook Express. You may still
have other corrupted dbx folders but those are the two obvious
candidates given your description of your problem.

Gerry,
did I do the fix wrong - should I search and destroy all dbx files and
folders? searched the c drive and there appear to be 70 of these *.dbx on the
c drive - both mine and my partners.
Sorry to be a pain but I'm pretty useless with this stuff. Its midnight just
gone here - got to cartch some zzzzz's.
Your advice I suspect is correct but its my exectution thats incorrect. Can
you spell it out for me?
Best regards
Iski

How many identities are you using? If you are using more than one then
you can ascertain the location of your Sent Items.dbx and Outbox.dbx by
selecting in an Outlook Express Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store
Folder.

You should not delete any dbx files in Windows Explorer other than the
Sent Items.dbx and Outbox.dbx relating to your identity. You must do
this when Outlook Express is closed. Having done that can you send and
receive. If you cannot what error message do you get.

Hi Gerry,
tried out further suggestions - I think i only have one identity. Located it
as described:- OE,tools, options, Mtanance, store folder - copied address into
seach in explorer, saved search. Closed OE - rebooted, located files in the
folder and deleted 'em all.
loaded OE, pressed send / recieve and two tasks showing as taking place,
hello the e-mail from Sony ericsson sent a week or two ago pops up - shown in
the inbox and the process stops with - "nip.exe" has encountered a problem
and will shut down - you may lose data - send error report?
Following this OE will not shut down properly and I get a message "end
program - o"
Mmmm..
any more thoughts on this one?
Best Regard

Looks like the file nip.exe is as follows:

"NIP.exe is a process belonging to Norman Virus Control. It handles
real-time POP3, SMTP and NNTP virus scanning. This program is important for
the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.
"

Close Outlook Express, disable your Norman virus program (if that's what you
use), Open Outlook Express and try deleting the problem message

Was your copy of Norman Anti Virus a freebie or did you pay for it?

Thanks Fitz and Gerry,
I haven't got Norton Utilities as far as I'm aware and never downloaded any.
The only anti-virus software I have is what came as standard with Windows:
"Norman virus control" which I have never used or taken updates on (although
i'm propmted every time I log on!). I have regular microsoft updates etc.
This is all very worrying.
Any more help?

OH JoY!!!
Thx Guys for helping me throught this - I unistalled norman - couldn't work
out how to disable it. deleted the e-mail that caused my problem (thx's Sony
ericsson) and recovered 40 of my e-mails from the past week or so.
Can't thank you enough - this has taken up most of my weekend!
Can I push my look and ask a supplementry? - would an anti virus package
have stopped this happening? Do I need one, and can you suggest a one for
simpletons like me?
There is a Microsoft firewall icon that appears sommewhere, not sure what
that is - anyway - any advice would be accepted greatfully.
Best Regards,
Isky!!

You should regularly update virus definitions.
Norman is not one of the better known Anti-Virus Programmes, although it
has been in business since 1993. It does not automatically come with
Windows XP. I imagine it was provided as a freebie by your computer
supplier. A better known and highly respected free ware anti-virus is
AVG.
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10342876.html
It automatically updates virus definitions.

You should also have an anti- spyware programme. Do you have one? If not
try:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Again it's free.

Stay away from Norton Utilities.

Just in case you have a problem similar to this in the future,
I'd suggest you disable the preview pane, so that an email's contents is
only displayed when you want it to.
In OE, click View | Layout and uncheck "Show preview pane"
