Two possibilities come to mind. Is the system taking a sizable chunk of
memory for graphics? I doubt this is the answer especially as it has
started to be a problem recently (unless someone has been fiddling). The
other possibility is that the memory has become defective and even though it
is reporting 512Mb somewhat less than this is actually available to the
system. If you can, temporarily, substitute another memory stick (it's got
to be the correct type).

Regards.

Well, I've found that SOME programs M$ to be specific will reconfigure the heck out of anything related. ie: once a month after the M$ update, Ihave to restore my mail program. IE6 wants me to use outlook. I used it for a few weeks with win98 in 99. I don't use ANY mail program that auto opens html mail.

Anyway's something you might look at is just how big the worksheet is.
I have a small XLS grocery list of 56 x M format.
couple times back I opened it up to find the sheet was maxed out. Took a while to restore it back to the single page of boxes.
But it made everything else come to a crawl with my 1 gig ram.
see if some or all of the pages aren't messed up.
I think CONTROL END and CONTROL PAGE DOWN will tell you exactly where theend of the sheet is.
I have no idea what made it jump to that size, possibly an office update.

How large is your C drive and how much free space? In Windows Explorer
rigt click on your C drive and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under the Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the
Peak?

You may find it helpful to know exactly how much of your pagefile is
being used. Use page file monitor to observe what is the peak usage.
Start it to run immediately after start-up and look at the log at the
end of the session. The log is Pagefilelog.txt. If you right click on
the file in Windows Explorer and select Send to, Desktop (Create
Shortcut). The same applies to XP_PageFileMon.exe.

A small utility to monitor pagefile usage:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm

Try Start, All Programmes, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Delete all
but the most recent Restore Point ( Start, Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, Disk Cleanup, More options). Run Disk Defragmenter by
selecting Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.
