Otulokk 2000: Program hangs indefinitly when exiting

I need some help,

Im using Outlook 2000 in a Corp/Workgroup setup. For the past 4-6 months
when I exit, the program hangs and I have to manually delete the process
from task manager. It is a new installation that is totally up to date...if
I move to another pc and configure the mail the same thing happens. I do
not believe that it is a problem with the installation. I used Outlook 2003
for a while and the same thing would happen...I think it might have
something to do with my account (AD Win2k). I have made many changes to my
account in the past few months...deleting/adding alias's, changing my
primary email address, ect. Is it possible that when I started using
Outlook 2003 it messed up my mailbox?

The problem is associated with the use of Outlook 2003 and
going back to Outlook 2000. When you use another profile
that never connected using Outlook 2003, you won't see the
problem. See KB834005 for a complete description of the
problem. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't have a fix
available for the problem. They offered me two options
when I called support: (1)wait for the next Office 2000
service pack with an unknown release date; or, (2) use
their hotfix not publiclly available or regression tested.
I opted for the hotfix but it wouldn't even run... it
looks like they still need to do more testing.

Try starting Outlook with the /cleanfreebusy switch and see if that helps.
Start, Run dialog. Enter "outlook.exe /cleanfreebusy" (without the quotes
but with the space before the switch). Then press Enter.

Outlook 2003 has an extra field in its free/busy information (4 instead of 3
as in the past) and that seems to make Outlook 2000 choke. Also, any
definition of rules or conversion of rules would also do it since rules are
now Unicode whereas before they were ANSI text. So delete any rules you
might have too.

I had the same problem.

From the command line run the Outlook 2000 program with 'outlook.exe /safe'
.. You should then be able to exit without Outlook 2000 locking up.

After running it with the 'safe' switch once, you can start Outlook using
your nomal method (ie. start menu, desktop shortcut, etc).
