Currently running XP Home with IE 6 and SP1. I'm finding IE 6 a little long
in the tooth... longing for tabbed browsing and other goodies (i.e. skins).
Has anyone here any experience with shells that go over IE such as the Avant
browser and MY IE2? Are they problematic (i.e. more trouble than they're
worth) or a godsend? And if the latter, which is the better choice? Thank
you.

Try Mozilla, or Firebird.

Because Windows XP is closely bound to Internet Explorer,
I suggest that you stay away from any plugins or
overlays. I have seen many problems with plugins such as
hotbar, google toolbar, webshots... etc. Most of the
items I have listed are classified as spyware and actually
send information about you and your activity to the plugin
provider.

I have been using MIE2 for several months no problems at all and some great
features! Highly recommended.

Testy

I Highly sudgest the Flashpeak Slimbrowser a shell for IE, best pop-up
blocker ever, and tabbed browsing the way it should to be, I used to use
Avant, then I used Mozilla for a while, Mozilla has tabbed browsing but
doesn't do it right. I never have more than one window for Internet.
Get it at http://www.flashpeak.com/sbrowser/sbrowser.htm

Well I've just downloaded and installed this - where is the tabbed browsing?
I can't see it.

NetScape 7.1 is more advanced than I.E. The standalone browser can be
downloaded from http://sillydog.org/narchive and co-exists well with I.E.,
should an MS-coded page forces its use.

Various Mozilla offshoots, based on the same technology, can be had at
http://mozilla.org.

Features include tabbed browsing and selective pop-up/under blocking. For
the mail and news clients there's filtering and a high degree of
customization. See http://www.holgermetzger.de/etips6.html for a taste of
what can be done.
