other browser windows close when closing one

Running IE6.0.2900 pn XP-pro SP2 - When having multiple browser windows open
and closing the second, third, or fourth window, frequently they all close!!
It doesn't happen all the time, but every 6 to 10 times. very frsutrating and
time-consuming when doing research. Is this something I can fix? Or is it a
known issue that will be remedied in a patch?

well when it crashes, it forces all windows closed... this is true in
all browsers...
