Good grief!!! - you wouldn't trust a web site to store valuable
backups, would you?

But I do use gdrive to store lots of misc. photos from my good ole digital
camera. And with 2 gigs now it's a handy resource. I've heard Yahoo is
promoting something similar and will be updating their storage from the
250mb to 1gig in May. There are other features I like as well, such as going
into my address book and having all related e-mails to an address appearing.
Also, there's the free pop3 option for mail client users. Not a bad deal at
all for free.

Of course. Encrypt the files with PGP.
And every server - here google.com - safes its own "harddisks"
in/on/with another network and special backup-PC´s. That´s a question
of insurance and damages.
