The reason for my query on 2/11 is that I have a computer with Win XP Pro on
the C drive, and another internal HD (D) which has been for data backup
only. I'd like to set it up to have XP on the C drive, and W98 SE on the D
drive. Currently, both drives are NTFS, and I know that means I can't
install 98. I'd like to first install 98 on the C, then XP on the D. Is that
possible?
Thanks

I think you need a boot manager .I'm not sure if ranish does that.Do a
search for XOSL.

Yes, I have done that.

Always install the oldest OS first on C:\
Then install the newer on D:\
Then install another newer again on E:\
etc.
No boot manager is then required, windows xp has this feature built-in.

When the disk is NTFS formatted, you need to use FDISK in windows 98 to get rid
of the NTFS partition.

If you choose to install XP on ntfs partition, then the win98 cannot write files
on d:\,
but freeware from sysinternals can let windows98 READ from d:\

How to install Windows® 98/Me after I've installed XP?
(without 3rd party software)

Assuming you have an install CD for 98, and not an upgrade CD:

Boot to DOS. (Download a bootable CD or floppy if you need to.) Make
sure you have Deltree (or a strong finger), Format, FDisk and Sys on
the boot medium, just in case. (Include any other software you think
you might need.)

If the HD file system is FAT, delete the Windows directory tree (use
Deltree). If the file system is NTFS, you'll have to format the drive
instead, so make sure you've saved any files you don't want to lose on
some other medium - CD, floppy, etc.

Boot the 98 CD and install 98.

X-No-Archive: yes

Currently, both drives are NTFS, and I know that means I can't
install 98

Whether it is XP or Win98 or DOS or Linux the disk is the same for all
- sides, cylinders and sectors. Otherwise you will have to buy
separate hard disks for each OS.

There are many programs that will simply wipe the first track and
after this, for all practical purposes, the disk appears new to any
OS.

Get slate.zip and clear you disk. You can then install Win98.

It should be here: ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/diskutil/slate10.zip

I think he meant "file system" rather than "drive".
