I tried this in the microsoft.public.excel, but no nibbles so
far:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
On my home PC, running Office 2003, I can open a .XLSX from Excel
2007 no problem.

But on somebody else's PC - even after installing "Microsoft
Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File
Formats" from
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3 Excel
throws "Unrecognized format...."

- Am I on the right track with that download/install?

- Is there a way to confirm that the install was successful?
The installer said it ended OK... but I'd like to see something
on my home system that confirms it and then see the same thing
on the other system.

Per David H. Lipman:
Maybe it is a file issue and isn't really a .xlsx ?

I'm pretty sure it is bc my own PC's Excel 2003 can open a copy
of the problem file.

Metadata even says it was created by Excel 2007.

OTOH, that's why I'd like tb able to see some more tangible
evidence of the successful install...

Since it sounds like the compatibility pack is really the ticket,
I'm still thinking maybe the problem PC doesn't really have the
compatibility pack installed even so the installer said it ended
ok.
