For some reason, in this newsgroup and in most of the other newsgroups
on the microsoft.public server to which I subscribe, I have messages
where the poster's name is "=?Utf-8?B?dGFzc2llcm92ZXI=?=". Has anyone
else had this problem? I have tried subscribing and unsubscribing and
have even tried a new news reader. My OS is Win2K.

They're written in a character set/language your computer doesn't
understand - I see them sometimes, too. How many are you seeing? If it's
infrequent, ignore it - delete the messages if you wish.

As frequently as 1 in 5 to 1 in 20 messages. Every screen has some, and
they are not the same users. If I look at the same messages in Google,
they are standard English characters or names. I do not have this
problem on any other news server, so the problem is probably not a
global setting in my newsreader.

Try switching your News Reader from Mozilla to Outlook Express and see
if the same problem occurs. Other than that, I suppose it could be a
problem with your ISP. Do you subscribe directly to
msnews.microsoft.com or are you going through your ISP's news server?

Directly to msnew.microsoft.com.

I run into that now and then too. I think it happens because they are using
a character set that is not fully supported by my newsreader (or it's
supported but not configured for it).
