question about Microsoft emails

C

Carrie

I can't find any newsgroups that seem to be just questions and problems
about MSN
I tried asking about this on the group I go on alot (Publisher) marking it
O.T. and the posts wasn't put on.
I have been getting email spam for drugs like Viagra, Cialis, etc that say
they are from MSN/Microsoft, one of their "partners".
Sometimes I'd get 2 or 3 a day.
It says on the bottom I have signed up to receive these and if I don't want
them to click unsubscribe. I usually think clicking unsubscribe just shows
them it's a real address and makes it worse. I tried it yesterday and says
"page cannot be displayed"
This morning I have 12 emails, supposedly from microsoft, most of them are
ads with this on the bottom, now some just say (without any ads)

I clicked on Unsubscribe and got the page cannot be displayed again.
The subjects in these are "urgent report" etc.
I don't think they are viruses because AVG scans then and says they're not
and there's no attachments.

I really don't think they are from Microsoft, but they are using their info
to make out they are.

Is there an address I can forward them to?

Or, is there a newsgroup where I could ask about this on, for possible
answers?

Thanks

Try reading http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/tips/header.html

After you've done this could always install a well-proven email filtering
program such as K9 to keep the undesirable messages out of your inbox in
the first place.

1. NEVER click any of the links if you are not positive it's a good
mail.! Use your own knowledge of what the addresses are if you want to
go there. If you don't know how to get there, don't go.
It would appear nothing bad happened because it sounds like those
accounts were shut down by the ISP due to complaints before you clicked
the link. But you may not always be so lucky.

2. No, they are not from Microsoft. That's a common forgery for a lot
of spam.

3. Yes and no. Sometimes ISPs wish to be notified of spams that gets
thru their filters. If yours does, they will say so online and tell you
how to forward a spam to them. Not all ISPs want to be notified because
of malicious use of such things.

4. Yes. A good group for you to post to (a different server) would be
news.spamcop.net .
If you want an easy way to access it, go to
http://www.spamcop.net/help.shtml
and scroll down to the newsgroups and click "NNTP" to the right of the
"Spamcop" entry. That should set you up in the newsgroups.
Or if you prefer forums (web access), under "Web Based Bulletin
Boards", click the "Index of all forums" link.
The folks on the forums are more of the neophyte types but experts
and gurus are there for helping out. The folks on the newsgroups are
more of the very experienced spamfighter types and seem less friendly
but it's mostly becasue they're simply all business and answer a LOT Of
questions every day and have done so for years. I'm not one of the
experts but I do hang out there a lot. The folks on the forums are more
the newbie types asking questions and, well, it works like any forum
does.

You can also parse email headers at that same site to try to get the
actual ISP that sent a spam as opposed to being part of the forgeries in
the headers. If you do that and are a beginniner, do not try to second
guess the tool; accept its recommendations.

Anyway, those are the best places to ask your questions. Mostly,
they're going to tell you pretty much what I told you here, but they'll
do a better job than I have.

No, I have nothign to do with SpamCop.net other than being a user of
their tools. Oh; and you do not have to pay to become a member. It's
free OR pay-for based on the amount of spam you submit; sort of a per
spam charge they claim is about $15/year average but I'm a free user and
don't need a spamcop email address so I don't pay.

Are you posting to newsgroups and forums using your real email address.
If yes are email address is totally compromised. The best solution is to
ask your Internet Service Provider for a new address.

Otherwise you need to munge your email address. In Outlook Express
select Tools, Account, News, Properties, General tab and change your
email address to something like (e-mail address removed).

You need to be aware that much spam contains malware so reading it can
be hazardous. Not all is detected by anti-virus and anti-spyware
programmes and removed. Some are very difficult to remove and once you
get an infestation your computer can be severely damaged. You can get
software to sort spam but the better way is to change your address to
stop it coming.

Your email server seems to be similar enough to the news server per
properties of your news post. Apparently, you're even using your real email
address here. You might as well jump up and down and say here I am, spam
me.

Some disclaimers at some websites are throwing your information at more spam
sites.

I wonder if there is anything that you do not have an opinion on or if there
is anything "you think" you don't know about?

If you found errors in my response, please just correct them and let the
OP know. I glanced thru it again and dont' see anything offhand wrong,
but anything is possible.
Oh, and there is an awful lot I don't know; everyone has opinions.
You should go ahead and state yours if you wish, and put this post back
on topic. I don't respond to subjects I have no experience or knowedge
of the Subject and queries the OP provides. Why do you?
