(OT) New PL domain funding

R

REM

Once upon a time, the viewers of ACF voiced their opinion of distaste
for the bloated and buggy browser selections available at the time. We
packed our picnic baskets and set out on a venture to find a freeware
browser that was small, secure and easy to use...... Many got lost and
were never found again.
Ah forget that! I suck at stories.

Pretty good!

Same here. It was suggested (I think) that one person get the site and
another the domain. I'll get the site if you'll get the domain and no
one has any objections.

It might be best to get the domain from a place that specializes in
domain names. My first domain was held hostage by the hosting company
after it broke the pricing contract and I refused to renew. I got both
domain and hosting together at that untrustworthy site.
maybe?

Seconded. Let's allow last minute voting and move to get the site up
and running.

When the voting for the name is done, I will contact a registrar and get
it registered. I think it is typical for 24-48 hours maybe more before a
new domain name gets resolved through DNS. If there are other ideas,
would be glad to hear them.

Distribution site for 2004 Pricelessware CD.
E-Mail me for details. (e-mail address removed)

- Usually insane; in more lucid moments, merely stupid.

I can also upload the 2005 to my under-development site. I offered the
site to Susan for free, but she declined. The reason why she declined
is that the password to upload stuff and edit, etc. is the same as our
(my dad's) ISP and e-mail password. The ISP said that the site cannot
have a different password. Susan felt that it would be too risky for
many people (the volunteers who help with the uploading, editing, etc.)
to have that password. I appreciate Susan's concern. Seeing as the
site is unused, and included in the cost of our monthly DSL fees, I may
as well put it to good use. Any concerns, offers, or suggestions?

Bandwidth is the first concern. The reported bandwidth was in excess
of 300 Gigs per Day. That is a huge amount and most accounts have
limitations of 20-30 Gigs per Month.

If the account does have unlimited bandwidth, it's just a matter of
getting the finished image uploaded. You could receive a CD and upload
it yourself. I'll bet your ISP reconsiders unlimited bandwidth shortly
afterwards, haha. That is some serious bandwidth!

They (my ISP) don't care about that. DSL rocks. They can handle the
traffic.

That's cool, but really really read the terms of service for the
account. Some home accounts charge extra when a certain threshold is
reached, and some cut off access to the site. If it's the latter, no
biggie, some access is better than none. But the last thing you want
is a surprise bill one month.

Just a question (must be a dumb one), can an ISO file be
"splited"? I mean can it be "splited" into different smaller
files and with an exe to put back together (just what a
downloader could do)? Then the splitted parts can be
"scattered" to be downloaded in different locations and be
easier on traffic.

Sure. There are quiet some utilities out there which will split to
self-rejoinable parts. Unfortunately, most of them are payware.
I have at least two in my archives which are free. Because I
split and join mostly 'by hand' I don't know whether they will
work with ISO's. And (to be honest) I'm too lazy to test it now.
;-)

Look at ZSplitter:
http://www.z-software.com/zd3_free_download.htm

or at JR Split File (joins via a Batch File):
http://www.spadixbd.com/freetools/

To be honest. I'm not convinced your idea is really that good.
If someone loads 20 parts but can't get the 21st because of
server problems or maybe transgressed transfer limits he/she
will be *very* disappointed. But it is condemned to happen if
a file is splattered on many servers. Backup servers can only
lessen the probability. The efforts of administration increase
at the same time.

Sorry to be so destructive. ;-)
