OT: MSN Messenger

I always understood that there were two messengers on my computer: Windows
Messenger, version 4.7.0.3001(which i don't use) and MSN Messenger, version
7.5.324.0. I'm having problems going to MSN today, my hotmail, i get a
message saying There was an error during sign-in - if you are not using the
most recent version of messenger click below for upgrade . Now the upgrade is
version 8.1 Windows Live Messenger but i don't want to upgrade my Windows
Messenger.

I think this started from the latest patch tuesday, so questions are:
1- Is there a new version of MSN Messenger and this is why i can't sign-in?
2- Would this be something to talk to an MSN tech through Verizon about?
3- Not receiving notifications from this forum is this Messenger related?
And yes, I did go to the MSN Messenger forum finding out there are dozens of
posts with problems signing-in to Windows Live Messenger 8.1. I havn't asked
any questions over there yet, I'd thought i would try here first. Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron,

I don't use MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger here so I can't answer
your questions about those programs.

However, you should be able to use the following link in any Browser to
access the login site for Hotmail:
http://login.live.com/login.srf?id=...tw=0&fs=1&fsa=1&fsat=1296000&lc=1033&_lang=EN

You can then save the page to your Favorites Folder, or to Links bar in IE
for easy access.

Or, Create a Shortcut Url on the Desktop to get to the login site by copying
the following into Notepad and saving it with a .url extension:

[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://login.live.com/login.srf?id=...tw=0&fs=1&fsa=1&fsat=1296000&lc=1033&_lang=EN

Windows Live Messenger is the successor name of MSN Messenger, as I
understand it.
(at least, my start menu shows both Windows Messenger, and Windows Live
Messenger)

Branding can be hard to keep up with!

I would go with the upgrade. Windows Live Messenger uses the same folder as
MSN Messenger so you can't run both at the same time. Additionally Live
Messenger has sign-on anaylsis so if you encounter problems it will
automatically try to determine and fix the problem. I don't think Verizon
would be able to help you (Verizon is only good at the easy problems). If
you are afraid to update because you think you will have sign-on problems,
then try installing some free software called Trillian. Trillian is a
messaging program that supports AIM, MSN and Yahoo and uses its own software
to communicate (i.e., the installation of Trillian will not affect what you
already have installed). If you can sign-on first with Trillian, then try
upgrading MSN Messenger to Live Messenger.

Hi Alan,

You are correct sir, you can use:
www.hotmail.com
in the address bar, and then your Browser is redirected to the link I
provided:
http://login.live.com/login.srf?id=...tw=0&fs=1&fsa=1&fsat=1296000&lc=1033&_lang=EN

You can also get there from here:
http://login.live.com
this will log you onto Windows Live, from which you can get to your Hotmail
account.

You should also be able to get there from here:
http://hotmail.msn.com

I don't use Hotmail or Gail that often, although I do keep up a free account
for both.

I finally found in a post dated back to early Jan. that indeed the update to
MSN Messenger 7.5 is Windows Live Messenger 8.1. I found the name change back
to Windows just a little confusing because i wasn't reading posts labeled
Windows Messenger. Thank you Bill for the direction in which i found more
help, and Mr. Cat i I will be taking your advise to upgrade and thanks for
that explanation. Enjoy, Ron

Hi Guys, I've read everyone's comments but I'm getting the message .....

"There was an error during sign-in - if you are not using the
most recent version of messenger click below for upgrade"

when WINDOWS LIVE TODAY is displayed after WINDOWS LIVE MESSENGER runs on my
laptop.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Si, I upgraded to Windows Live Messenger 8.1 from MSN Messenger 7.5 and are
having an error message saying sign-in error when i go to Windows Live Today.
I think this is also stopping me from receiving my hotmail in Today also.
I called my Verizon and asked to speak to an MSN tech and he informed me
that Today is having problems and will be fix as soon as posible. Now do you
read something in Today that says we (msn) are fixing the mail tab please
have patience ? I'm still trying to find out if this error msg. is related to
the fixing of the hotmail mail tab problem. Are you having the same ? Ron
