WD & MSN

I have a rather unique issue, at least, as far as trying to resolve it, (I
haven't come across anyone else with this problem)

I have installed (and uninstalled) a few different versions of MSN, with no
luck; MSN (or Windows Live) will not run on my laptop, (I get the
notification that some progs are blocked)when I click on the WD icon, the
'software explorer' says that MSN is permitted...but when I choose 'run
blocked program', the only choice is Messenger. When I do run it, the WD
icon dissapears, but MSN never does launch.

Most of my searches yield fixes for when error codes are given, etc, but not
for MSN not even launching.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm - I think you need an MSN support forum--not sure we have the
experience here to answer this. I do have some version of MSN installed on
my wifes XP Home machine upstairs, and I haven't seen any issues, but the
install predates Windows Defender, although I might have updated it
somewhere in the course of the years of beta.

I do have a new Orange CD labelled MSN dial-up with no version number that
came in the mail last week or so, but I'm not sure I want to install it on
this machine...

Looking at the available choices, I suspect:

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...ba0-0cd5-47e8-9cdc-969b03bc0bf1&lang=en&cr=US

might be the place to start, even if you are not actually on dialup--but I'm
not certain. There is also MSN Discussion, and MSN Netnews Discussion, and
MSN search, as well as Messenger related groups.

If you believe that Windows Defender is causing a problem with the install,
turn it off: Tools, Options, scroll all the way to the bottom using the
scrollbar on the right of the window and uncheck "use the program." This is
safe and reversable in all OS versions.

You may want to restart the computer to be sure that all services are
stopped, and then retry the installation.

This suggestion is made purely from the standpoint of getting your
application installed--it is reasonable to turn antimalware apps off for the
duration of an install if some problem seems possible--but you should
reverse this step after the installation attempt.

If the install fails, even with Windows Defender off, I think that absolves
Windows Defender in this case, but I'm not sure where to go from there--to
the above forum, I think.

You haven't mentioned what version of Windows is involved--I have no
experience at all with MSN on Vista, for example, and don't know what
versions work or don't work, or what workarounds are recommended.

Sorry, temporary brain freeze. Blocked programs just means that you used
Software Explorer to remove the Run key from the system registry to prevent
the programs from running. Defender remembers the run keys and you may
re-instate them if desired.

Sorry for the lack of information; I have an Acer Aspire Laptop which came
with Vista Basic. I assumed my issue is with Vista and WD, which is why I'm
here and not at a Windows Live Messenger forum. (And it is Windows Live
Messenger, or what used to be MSN)

I have three images showing what I mean by Windows Defender blocking
Messenger:

Even if I go in and 'Run Blocked Programs', it does not launch.

@ Mr Cat -- "Sorry, temporary brain freeze. Blocked programs just means
that you used Software Explorer to remove the Run key from the system
registry to prevent
the programs from running. " <---If this were the case, how would I go
about reversing this?

@ Bill Sanderson MVP -- Thanks for the links, I will give them a try and see
if I get lucky; Also, thanks for the directions on shutting WD off, I will
try that as soon as I am done my current work.

Thank you for the pictures Duane. In this case, a picture is worth a
thousand words. I just learned something new about Vista. Here are some
links that explain what is going on:

To prevent UAC from getting involved, you would not want to remove the run
key via Defender or Msconfig. Fortunately, this can be accomplished in
Windows Live Messenger. On the main Messenger window, click the button to
show menu (if the menu is off). Next Click Tools, click Options. On the
Options Window, click General.
Uncheck the box to automatically start Messenger at Windows startup. Hope
that resolves your problem.
