OT: exe icons in explorer

Is there a way in WinXP to show only generic exe icons in explorer?
Extracting these icons from exe files in folders with a large number of
programs is slow, and once even crashed the explorer.

Go to the registry and in:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\DefaultIcon
Change the value of:
(Default)
from:
%1
to the icon of your choice. One possibility is:
C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,2
which is the default for executables without a built-in icon on WinXP.

I haven't tested this personally, so please report back how it works.

Try an XP news group.

Thanks.
