[OT] Downloading Live Messenger with Opera

Morten Skarstad

Although having kicked out the previous MSN Messenger in favor of GAIM,
I thought I'd take a look at the new Windows Live Messenger. So I went
to http://messenger.msn.com and expected to see an easy download button
somewhere. I didn't. Instead I got http://ideas.live.com/whatis.aspx

Then I tried http://www.msn.com and easily found a Messenger icon. I
pressed it, and was yet again sent to http://ideas.live.com/whatis.aspx

The "whatis" part of the URL was pretty much what went through my head
when I found this. WTF is this? Where's the download link? Hasn't this
thing gone out of beta? And where do I download it? A lot of clicking
back and forth and on different links made me no closer to an answer.

Now, this all happened in Opera 9. On a hunch I fired up Firefox, went
to the MSN page again, and bingo, there was a page with Live Messenger,
localized in my language, complete with easy download links. I then
tried IE, and unsurprisingly got the same result as with FF. I even
tried with ELinks from a Linux box, and I still got the correct page.

OK, back to Opera: I now turned off automatic redirects and started
again. I went to http://messenger.msn.com and was in turn redirected to
http://join.msn.com/messenger/overview ,
http://get.live.com/messenger/overview , http://ideas.live.com/ and then
finally to http://ideas.live.com/whatis.aspx

So, does anybody have any clue what gives? Are Microsoft trying to make
Live Messenger inaccessible to Opera users on purpose? Or am I the only
Opera user experiencing this?

I have no explanation but also experienced the same thing with Opera 9
Build 8505. Live Messenger was accessible when I used K-Meleon.

Using Opera 9 I came directly to the download page in my, our :),
language using your path description.
No problem downloading, either.
