OT: CODEC help - How to Start Over?

CODECs on my compluter are all screwed up - not positive when/how it
happened but symptoms appeared after a Windows Update. Previously I
could play most video formats without problem but now I get errors in
WMP 9 and other installed players such as the ones supplied with my
ATI 9600 Pro video card. Over the years have installed several CODECs
to deal with DivX, SVCD, etc. so I am not sure what is obsolete and
what is current.

Would appreciate a pointer to a FAQ on how to remove everything and
start over, and any recommendations. Thanks!
