I received my computer new from Compaq in November, 2001.
It came preloaded with Windows ME but because it was a
new computer, I was offered Windows XP Upgrade FREE. I
accepted and have installed the XP upgrade version on my
computer. Everything had been running alright until about
3 months ago. My computer started slowing down from boot-
up, connecting to the internet, and surfing the internet/
answering emails. I keep the Temp folders, Temp.Internet,
and History folders empty after every internet session.
Working from the desktop is also slowing down. I have
asked Compaq Tech. support for assistance and nothing
they recomend so far has helped speed up my computer. For
what ever reason, everytime I call for Tech Support, I
end up speaking to somebody in New Deli, India and this
compounds my problems with the language issue. I have now
been told by Compaq Tech Support that the Windows XP
upgrade will NOT work properly because I need to install
the FULL Windows XP Version on top of Windows ME. Has
ANYBODY else had this same problem, that is, With the
Windows XP Upgrade, your computer slows down. If this has
happened to anybody else, would you please email me and
let me know how you corrected this problem. I have tried
reinstalling Win. ME and using that on my computer but
then my printer will NOT work. Please, can anybody help
me ? It seems to me that Compaq/HP are NOT interested in
helping people like me once they have your money.
Otherwise, Why is there not any willingness to answer
phone calls here in the USA ? I purchased the extended
waranty for both software and hardware but I am afraid my
waranty is going to run out and that is just what Compaq
is waiting for. Thank You to anybody that will answer me
and send me an email at (e-mail address removed) . I
have about 512 mgs of ram so that is not a problem and
the only programs I have added are McAfee Virus
Protection/ firewall, my printer and my internet service.
Again, Thank you. (e-mail address removed)

Hi, Johnnie.

I'm sure you will be getting a lot of input for your problem, but as I seem
to be first, may I suggest a quick look at your startup configuration -
Start/Run and type msconfig. Check the Startup tab and disenable anything
there you don't need.

Right click the taskbar and select Task Manager and check out Processes and
see what else is going on in the background. Being careful, you can "End
Process" for some items you don't want. (FindFast is one culprit).

Run Disk Cleanup. Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools. Finally, how long
since you ran Defrag?

Good luck,

Ed
