Order of styles in style pane

I have Vista and Office 2007. I use styles A LOT. The styles list does an odd
thing in which it is semi-alphabetical: most of the styles line up by
letter/number, and are therefore easy to group into related groups, and find.
This speeds my work because I use related styles in a given document. I give
them similar names, and can move between them quickly.

But some styles go completely out of alphabetical order, for no reason I can
see. They are the same type of style, often based on other styles that they
should be grouped close to. Is there anything I can do to make them all
appear alphabetically? Thanks.

I'm a little vague on this because I don't have Word 2007 installed, but
there's a Manage Styles dialog in which you can set not only style
visibility but also style priority.

Some more details:

Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S (or click the launcher button in the title bar of the
Styles group) to open the Styles task pane. Click the Options link in the bottom
right corner.

The first dropdown controls which styles appear. If you want to use the
"Recommended" setting, you can use the Manage Styles dialog (third button from
the left at the bottom of the Styles task pane) to change which ones are
recommended.

The second dropdown controls the order in which they appear. You want to change
this from "As Recommended" to "Alphabetical".

Finally, change the option button at the bottom from "Only in this document" to
"New documents based on this template", which saves the option in the
Normal.dotm template (assuming that's the base template of the active document).

If you use the Customize dialog to add the Style dropdown to the Quick Access
Toolbar, the options also affect the dropdown. However, it seems they don't have
any effect on the Quick Styles gallery's order.

GREAT! That was the answer. I've been enduring this malady for months. When
something doesn't work in software, it gives you an underlying foreboding
that something can go really wrong...so now I'll have one less thing to worry

Bless my soul. Using a wide-screen monitor I never saw the options link
until I dragged the pane upwards. Not a pain anymore!
