Orange SMTP server and windows mail

Big Ron

Since getting a new viao laptop with vista/winmail I have been able to
receive emails, although unable to open nor save any type of attachment,
despite having the "do not allow attachments to be opened which could
potentially be a virus" box unchecked. At the same time, I cannot send any
emails through winmail, but can through the orange website, so the problem
must lie with winmail settings.

Is there a definitive answer to this problem? Reading through older posts
here, nobody has seemed to get a definitive answer as yet.

Good morning Ron, you have not found a definitive answer, because there
isn't one.
The vast majority of WM problems are either incorrect account settings input
by the user, or interference to the mail procedure from 3rd party
applications, such as anti virus and spam filtering software.

To start to diagnose your problem, please select>copy>paste the complete
error message that WM provides when it fails to send, to your reply to this
thread.

Tell us about the AV applications etc that are installed on your new
machine.

Hi Steve - thanks for replying - here's the test message I sent to myself:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'gvdf', Account:
'pop.orangehome.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.orangehome.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP,
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I disabled AVG and windows defender but the same thing happens.

Any clues there?

Can't see anything from the error, are you connecting via an Orange ISP
connection, or some other ISP?

Most new PC's come with trial AV software, did that machine ever have
another AV installed?

Regarding AVG, I would suggest that you uninstall it completely, and then
reinstall using the Custom install option when offered, disable the mail
scan option at that time.

The problem manifests itself when I'm away from home using, say, a hotels
wireless connection, which could be anything. My settings in winmail relate
to my own home Orange account however. I thought the fact that incoming
attachments can't be saved or even opened might be the best indication of
the problem...

The fact I can use email both in and out using orange webmail tells me it is
definitely a winmail problem..

It happens whilst away because orange is not allowing relaying from your
'incorrect' address
You'll have to ask Orange what you have to change in your mail settings to
allow relaying, could be as simple as 'authenticate server' - thats of
course if Orange tech understands the process :)

Well Ron, you managed to avoid answering all of my previous questions.

Try again, are you connected to orange internet at home?

What if any other AV applications have been previously installed on that PC?
Norton etc.

What are the file types that you can't open, .dat maybe?

Did you do as I proposed regarding AVG?

Regarding connecting to send mail, you must use the SMTP server of that
connection, or use webmail.

I'm connected to orange internet at home on my desktop which uses XP and
doesn't have any problems. There was no AV on this machine when I loaded
AVG. I have now totally uninstalled AVG and disabled the firewall. Still
can't send, and I can not open ANY type of attachment in incoming mail, ie
ALL types of attachment can neither be saved nor opened. Looks like I will
constantly be changing the SMTP server setting depending which hotel I'm in.
Maybe I should simply go back to XP with the laptop.

You don't have just one problem. Your attachment problem is
unrelated to your sending problem.
Sending problems while away from home are due to an issue
called "port 25 block". For more on this see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask Orange if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently,
substitute the SMTP server belonging to that connection. This is
not feasible when staying at transient locations.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

Your attachment problem is likely due to your antivirus. As a test,
uninstall it, then try attachments again.

Most computers when first purchased come with a trial version
of either Norton or McAfee antivirus. Are you sure that is not the
case here? Those two products require special removal tools to
undo their damage.

Also, there is a possibility that the Orange account in your
Windows Mail is corrupted. Delete that account, restart Windows
Mail, then recreate the account.
