Optical Mouse Blue USB and PS/2 Compatible not detected by Win XP

Hi,
I just bought a Microsoft Optical Mouse, and first installed it using my USB port. The mouse worked fine under Windows XP Professional.

But my box is a dual-boot system, running both Win XP and linux. I was unable to get the USB connection working under linux, and so I switched to the PS/2 port. Now the mouse works flawlessly under linux, but under Windows XP Professional, the mouse is only detected once in about every 10 boots. Most times, the Intellipoint 4.1 software does not start up, the mouse light stays dark, and no mouse appears in my hardware profile.

Since the mouse and PS/2 hardware work correctly under one OS, I have ruled out a hardware problem.

Since both operating systems are using the exact same bios configuration, I've also ruled out a bios incompatability.

In changing from a USB to PS/2 connection, I've taken the following steps:

- Uninstall the mouse driver in the hardware profile
- Disconnect the PS/2 connection
- Reboot
- Install Intellipoint 4.1 software
- Reboot and then shut down the computer
- Plug in the mouse
- Start the computer

I've also taken these steps, using the above procedure as a guideline:
- Disable Norton Anti-Virus
- Disable Firewall
- Remove all Windows Updates recently installed
- Download all Windows critical updates and service packs available and reinstall
- Plug my old PS/2 mouse in and get it working (it still works perfectly)
- Update Intellipoint 4.1 to Intellipoint 5.0 according to the instructions

Hi,

I would suggest you to uninstall the intellipoint software first. Then unplug the PS/2 mouse and shutdown windows.
Plug in the optical mouse into the PS/2 port and start windows.
Windows should find the optical mosue and install the generic mouse driver and your mouse should work OK.
Now install the intellipoint 5 drivers and change the setting of the mouse to your choice.

considered fixing the usb under *nix issue?

to me this would seem the easier option.. and wouldn't
have seen you re-installing/removing a ton of doze
software...

the mouse works 10% in doze through ps/2 but fine plugged
into the old USB port..

your prolly going to have a much better and easier time
sorting out your *nix usbd to be honest..

my opinion of course.

considered fixing the usb under *nix issue?

LOL yeah I am now considering this option, but first I want to try
Peters suggestion to the letter since I hope to use the USB port for
my printer.

Usually it's the other way around- Windows loads my hardware drivers
correctly and linux doesn't.

Windows XP has always been a bit erratic loading my PS/2 driver, even
with the old mouse that works correctly. Usually it just takes a
reboot to get the mouse to come up, but it just doesn't seem to be
able to load a driver for this optical mouse.

I'm pretty sure my unix issue was resolved by using the IMPS/2 mouse
driver. The hotplug script was correctly identifing the device when it
was plugged into the USB port. I just didn't have the right driver
loaded.

Thanks
