Optical Drive Name

Not a critical issue but would like to know if it is possible to change the
label of an optical drive listed in explorer. Recently installed and so far
so good but label lists as CD Drive when drive is actually a CD-RW Drive.
Anyway to change the label assigned?

Tried to type label in the properties window but will not allow any typing.

Thanks.

The CD drive / CD-RW drive gets the name from the BIOS

To fix your problem , re-boot the system and go into the BIOS set up and
then re-detect the CD-RW drive , it should come up with the actual brand
name of the CD drive , once that happens , it should display it as a CD-RW
drive in Windows.

Device is listed correctly (brand name and capability) in BIOS. Also listed
correctly (brand name, model number and capability) in device manager.

Hmmmm… device has been tested and is working properly for now so maybe it’s
best I leave well enough alone. Minor in the overall scheme of things,
right. However, if someone knows of an easy fix, feel free. Thanks.

No problem : my drives all have specific names. See regfile below as an
example. Just adapt it to your drive letters.

----------END REGFILE-----------
Just copy, paste into a text file with extension .reg and right-click->fuse
into registry ( after letters and icons adaptations to your system of
course)
Now when you open in "My Computer" you will have icons and names as wanted
My icons are very explicit and represent the type of drive.
Good luck

You could try and do a rescan of the system hardware after you have booted
into Windows , it may pick up the change and write it to the registry.

To do this right click on
My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager

Then select the root of the device tree < computer name >
and then select from the menu Action -> Rescan For Hardware Changes

Thank you for all of the input. Rescan results in same explorer label. All
other designations or labels (in device manager and BIOS) are correct with
respect to brand and RW capability.

MoiMeme, I don’t see the ‘DriveIcons’ reg key within the registry.

Since this issue is just a label issue and has so far not impacted the
functionality of the device, I think I might error on the side of caution
with respect to this issue and leave well enough alone. Thanks again for the
input.
