operations master offline

Hello. I have a problem with my operations master being offline, even though the server is up and running. We have single operations master, so it controls the Domain Naming, RID, PDC, and Infrastructure. I have a different server as the Schema Master, and two other servers as the Global Catalog servers. I wouldn't mind seizing the operations master, but this server is also our only Exchange server, so you can see I'm in a crisis
There aren't any huge major problems in the network, except when we try to connect to the Mail server from other computers using the name of the computer. So if I go to Run and then type \\mail, it gives me an error that says it's not accessible and then below it it says Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect
If I use the IP address of the server, it connects fine. So I'm guessing it's using AD to get to the server (netlogon)
I did have a hiccup with Exchange, but it seems to be ok again and the outlook clients are running ok
What I need to know is: can I demote the mail server to a regular domain server instead of a domain controller and then seize the operations master? Or does the mail server have to be removed from the domain, format the hard drive, and then put it back in the domain
thanks

Doug,

You've got a DNS issue here. Are the client machines pointing to the DCs for
DNS? Run netdiag and dcdiag on your DCs, and attach the results to a reply
here.
