Operation Failed removeing AD on a Win2k Server

Operation Failed
Attempt to configure the machine account ...on server ... failed.
"The Parameter is incorrect"

Getting the above error while doing a dcpromo on a win2k server. Our
Catalog Domain is w2k, we have 1 Win2003 domain controller and the one I am
trying to demote win2k.

I am trying to remove the domain controller and keep getting the above
error.

One strange thing is when I look at the Domains in Active Directory

Under sites and services....all server names look fine
however
Under users and computers...the name for my server in question looks strange
(i.e. servername followed by this CNF:d163ceb1-993e-40db-ade8-ca394d2a0e6d)

Is there another computer in your domain that has the same name as yours
only without the "CNF:d163ceb1-993e-40db-ade8-ca394d2a0e6d" ?

Have you tried the DCPROMO /FORCEREMOVAL approach?

Yes, this machine was on the domain at one time and then converted to a
server....was able to remove old and then dcpromo was fine

or you can delete the failed DC by using NTDSUTIL
do a search using google for "metadata cleanup" and you'll find plenty of
results.
