operation could not be completed

.... trying to add a printer. The spooler service is started 'net start
spooler' confirms that the service is already started.

Any further ideas suggestions would be appreciated.

After hours of research on the internet I found a suggestion to try
printmig.exe (downloadable from microsoft). I ran it on a virgin XP
installation to back up the spooler and restored the file to the 'broken' PC
- printer then found and installed OK
