Add Printer stops Printer Spooler services

This is a follow up plea for assistance from an earlier mailing:

All printers have gone from my list of printers
When selecting 'Add Printer' from Printers and Faxes the message
"Operation can not be completed" is returned. This is the full
message.

MS article 314876 suggests restarting the printer spooler. I have
done this from the Command Prompt and from Administration / Services.
The Printer Spooler starts ok and stays started, until the 'Add
Printer' button is selected agin. This appears to have the effect of
stopping the Printer Spooler service and returns the message
"Operation can not be completed" again.

Any help gratefully received as I seem to have run out of helpful
Microsoft Articles.
