Operation could not be completed (Installing printer)

O

Oscar Espinosa

Hello,

Since days ago, I've a problem. When I try to add a printer (with the
assistant installation or connecting directly to a printer) in a computer
with Windows XP Professional SP2 it shows a messages saying:

- Operation could not be completed.

I tried to reinstall sp2 and I obtained the same results. It's very
important to be able to install a new printer on this computer and I don't
know what to do.

Thank you very much.

I have a similar situation on a XP Home edition. About a week plus ago the
spooler subsystem app error message appeared. I have done the regedit
routine and have tried the printer trouble shooting route with the same
result - spooler subsystem not available and the add printer "operation not
available."

I need to add that after I did the regedit routine i.e., HOTKEY...., and I
reinstalled my McAfee viruscan that I was able to use my printer on the first
reboot. You can bet after a not being able to print for days, I took
advantage of it. I shut the computer down and when I fired it up the next
time, back to square one - "spooler..."

I need some more insight into what is happening on my machine.

Thanks in advance,

Dear Ramesh,

First, I apologize for misspelling your name, but no the spooler service
will not start. I look into starting the service under "printer and
faxes"/file/server properties, but the computer would only throw up an error
message.

Thanks.

What's the exact error message seen when you attempt to start the Print

Click Start, Run and type:

Dear Ramesh,

Thanks for the help. The spooler did start. There aren't any printer
drivers or at least the driver for my printer in the system, but that can be
downloaded.

You will hear from me again if anything else related to this issue pops up.

Thanks again!

Dear Ramesh,

I started partying too soon. When I fired up my computer today, bad news.
Back to square one. The same spooler message came up during the boot up and
for fun after I signed in, I went to "printers and faxes" and then to "add
printer;" the computer threw up the "operations cannot...." message.

SO, two questions come to mind, why did this situation happen in the first
place, and secondly, why did it seem like thing were on the amends last
night, but not today?

Look forward to hearing from you!! :)

Dear Ramesh,

Another update in the saga. Yesterday when I started up my computer, the
same "spooler subsystem..." error message came up. (I hadn't read your 4/30
response until 5/1 @ 3pm.) I went to printer and faxes and took a chance at
adding a printer anyway. When I clicked on "add printer" the wizard came
right up and I was able to add my printer. The printer worked fine as I
printed a number of documents. This morning (5/1), I started up my computer
and again I receive the same "spooler..." error message. It appears that the
computer is operating correctly, but the error message is still there. Am I
correct in my assumption or is there more to it? If it truly an erroneous
error message, how do I make the computer realize that it is working
correctly?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I will apply your "4/30" posting and will respond.

Dear Ramesh,

I went to the website that you suggested and found the eventlog/service
control manager. I don't know what exactly I am to looking for, but here is
what I did see:

The first error occured on 4/10 - Source DCOM, Event ID10005 - Attempting to
start Msk Service.

The second error - 4/11 - IrDA Protocoal Service failure

Third error - 4/11 - Infrared Monitor error

What do you make of that and what other information would you like?

Also, while I was at winxptutor, I found a registry mechanic trial program
which I downloaded and ran. It found 801 problems and repair the problems
down to 55. That is still a boat load of problems. Is the PC Mechanics
program a worthwhile investment?

Thanks in advance.

In the Event log, skip the "informational" entries, and look at the entries
denoted by Red X. You may try clearing the log once and restart.

I don't use any registry cleaner. If you're going to use one (to clear MRUs
and other stuff like that), use it with caution. A complete registry backup
would be needed, as we've heard many many horror stories about registry
cleaners..

Dear Ramesh,

Another day of the same stuff. Anyway, I applied your last posting,
clearing the events log. There was not any change. What I did do though was
to go to the events log immediately after rebooting to see what had
transpired in the reboot process. Here is the "error" break down: 11 errors
- service control manager, 5 errors - print. I don't know for sure what to
make of this information. I hope you do.

I was dismayed when I booted up my computer today. After having the ability
to print yesterday, not being able to print today was frustrating. It was
interesting in that, as I state earlier, I had added a couple of printers,
shut down my machine, started it up again, and they were still there, but

and other stuff like that), use it with caution. A complete registry
backup
would be needed, as we've heard many many horror stories about registry
cleaners..

Dear Ramesh,

I went to the website that you suggested and found the eventlog/service
control manager. I don't know what exactly I am to looking for, but
here is
what I did see:

The first error occured on 4/10 - Source DCOM, Event ID10005 -
Attempting to
start Msk Service.

The second error - 4/11 - IrDA Protocoal Service failure

Third error - 4/11 - Infrared Monitor error

What do you make of that and what other information would you like?

Also, while I was at winxptutor, I found a registry mechanic trial
program which I downloaded and ran. It found 801 problems and repair
the problems down to 55. That is still a boat load of problems. Is the
PC Mechanics program a worthwhile investment?

Thanks in advance.
