Operating System not found

We have "inherited" a HP Pavilion 7915 computer that indicates it has
Windows XP in it (we believe about two years old). It is our intention to
get it up and running so we can give it to someone who cannot afford one.

When we turn it on, the HP splash screen comes up, then it goes to a black
screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner of the screen .
.. . after a few seconds the message "Operating System not found" comes up in
the same place. When doing Ctrl-Alt-Del it just repeats the above.

If anyone can tell us where to start to get it going, we would sure
appreciate it.

Go to the hard disk manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic software
respective to your hard disk. After the test, you will know if the hard disk is bad or
not..

Operating system not found has a couple of possible explanations.
(1.) The disk drive itself is defective and Windows cannot load
(2.) The Drive was formatted or partitioned & no operating system
is installed.
To determine if the drive is present and spinning up, you'll need to
enter BIOS setup. On the Standard page should be a table showing
devices currently installed. The hard drive should be connected to
the Primary/Master IDE channel. It will appear as a device descriptor
like WDC 8021 or Seagate ----.
To access BIOS Setup requires a special Key Press when the system
is powered on (Del, F1, F2 and F12 are common).

I know this might sound silly, but it has gotten me a few times
unexpectantly. Make sure you don't have a floppy disk or CD inserted in their
respective drives.

No, that's actually a very good suggestion. I think Technical folks
always gravitate to a hardware/software problem and overlook the
people factor (Like leaving a disk in the floppy drive).
Thanks.

I wish the floppy disk WAS the problem. That would have been Easy!! Yes,
we have been caught by the "floppy disk left in the drive by a dummy"
problem.

After wrestling with the hard drive to find out what brand it was (Western
Digital Protege), and downloading the Diagnostic Tools from WD, now we have
a "space" problem because the tools .zip file is 1.53MB, too big for a
floppy. Also, after unzipping it, instructions say to save it on the
Desktop, then run tests.

Well . . . how do we do that, when ALL we are getting is a black screen with
"Operating System Not Found?" How do we get to the desktop?

The following was found in the BIOS setup:

Primary Master: WDC WD400EB-11CPFO-(PM)
Secondary Master: LG CD-ROM CRD-848

Installed Memory 128MB SDRAM
Core Version: 4.06
BIOS ver. 3.05 8/24/01
Processor Serial Number: Disabled

Thanks to everyone for their help. These newsgroups are better than a
classroom, and this 70+'s couple appreciate your expertise and patience.

The WD Diagnostic should be executed on a PC but should create a set of Floppy Disks. The
floppy disk is then booted to test the hard disk.

you want "Data Lifeguard Tools 11 diagnostic"
http://support.wdc.com/download/downloadxml.asp#2

to download
http://support.wdc.com/download/dlg/DlgDiagv504c.exe

The diagnostics test was done. The result was that there were errors on the
hard disk and that they were repaired. The following info was on the
screen:

Quick Test - Error Status - Code 007
Extended Test - Errors Found
Drive Repaired
Code 0223

We rebooted the computer, the HP splash screen came up, then it went to the
black screen with a cursor flashing in the upper left-hand corner. Before
this test, we received the message that the "Operating System Cannot be
Found". After the test we get only the flashing cursor.

Would appreciate suggestions on what we do now.

As always, thank you for your help.

Replace the drive and reinstall Windows with HP's recovery disk if you
have one. Check with HP tech support about getting recovery cd's if you
don't and also whether the replacement drive needs to be the same
make/model/size as the old one. If the computer is really only 2 years
old, it is still worth salvaging.
