Operating system not found - Hp Omnibook xe3 gc

While trying to get my laptop up and running again I cannot get it to load
windows 2000, even with the boot and restore disk. I get a black screen that
reads 'operating system not found'. When I did a diagnostics test it did not
detect the hard drive, so thinking it was a bad hard drive I went and
purchased a new one. I am still having the same problems with the new drive,
operating system not found and no hard disk detected. Can anyone help me or
guide me in the right direction please?

The drive controller may have failed or your cmos settings may be incorrect.
Try resetting cmos setup to factory defaults.

To run the BIOS Setup utility.
1. Shut down Windows and restart the computer (Click Start, Shut Down,
Restart).
2. When you see the HP logo, press F2 to enter the BIOS Setup utility.
3. Choose 'Get Default Values'
4. Choose 'Saving Changes and Exit'

| Thank you for your response. How do I reset the cmos setup?

I tried this and it didn't work. I also tried to recover the factory
installed hard disk with the boot/recover cd (again) and it didn't even
start. I got an error message saying...

"Error encountered while creating Save to Disk partition.
X:\TOOLS\S2D> ".

Any other ideas?
Thanks again for any help.

Tried what? If you mean you were successful in resetting the default cmos
setup. Was a drive detected by cmos setup? The cable may be also bad, the
drive controller may be bad, and or the mobo may have failed.

Yes, I tried resetting the default cmos setup but it did not work. No drive
was detected. Which cable could be bad? I am thinking that maybe the ide
(?adapter?) that connects the hard drive to the motherboard may be bad, as I
have read something on that elsewhere. I'm not sure where to find one though
- or if that is even the problem.
What is the drive controller? I'm assuming the mobo is the motherboard?
Thank you for all your help.

The cable is what connects the drive to the drive controller. The drive
controller is probably integrated into the mobo. Yes mobo = mother board.
It's probably time for a new laptop.
